2001 Mazda Protege ES
Before buying a car I researched problem areas... mainly the motor mounts. I would like to replace mine. I will have access to all the tools I'd need. Has anyone else done this and how involving is it?
Some vehicles this is very easy, others not so much. I'm wondering were my Protege fits in.

Thank you!

the front and side mounts are easy. the rear mount is a PITA, even with the engine out it still sucks. Mazda really did intend for the subframe to be dropped to replace the rear mount lol. but it's doable. i did my rear mount when i pulled the motor so it wasn't as bad. there is a harness that runs above the mount with a harness clip bolted to the firewall. you will need to unbolt this clip and dremel off the lower stud (i believe there's two studs) in order to get clearance for the nuts holding the mount to the subframe. i recommend using 1/2" drive sockets and ratchet, possibly a breaker bar if your 1/2" ratchet isn't long enough. you will also need an extension and swivel joint.

Thank you! I may have to pull my engine eventually anyways so maybe I will just wait until then.

the passenger side usually goes first, mine was completely torn through, the amount of wheel hop was crazy. i was able to replace it by just unbolting the mount and swapping it. the motor only dropped an inch or two so it wasn't a problem.

i would at least do the front and side mounts, then wait till you pull the motor to do the rear. BTW are you going to get new OEM mounts or upgrade to polyurethane?
