MY 02 Protege needs the engine mounts replaced. Thay have all leaked and collapsed. Is this a difficult repair? The parts are not that expensive and I would like to do this myself.

you can find how-tos and guides on installation in this forum. some aftermarket mfg offer installation instructions on their websites.

the mounts will require basic tools, some breaker bars if you do not have air tools. a lot of time and patience is recommended. the front mount, no. 2 engine mount, below the radiator is easy, it took me 30 minutes and some scraped knuckles but i would never pay a shop to do that.

i read on this forum that the fluid filled mount is the ride side (passenger) no. 3 engine mount. if any mount has "leaked" it would have been that one. that mount may require the engine to be supported. usually a jack under the engine will suffice if you do not have an engine hoist or support. if you have a manual trans, the mazdaspeed protege no. 3 engine mount is a stiffer mount than what comes on the protege5. you can consider that a small but noticable upgrade if you are searching for OEM parts.

i am about to change my rear motor mount soon as it is torn and creating a single "clunk" sound when i accelerate or brake. i hear its a pain because of the time, lack of space to maneuver the tools, and needing access from the top and bottom of the car.
