Most bang for the buck?

I'm on the boards and I don't see anyone blowing their motors. I'll look into it more, but I know guys with $1200 worth of bolt-ons running 12's. That's good enough for me. Just for arguments sake. I bet there's a lot more blown MSP's and turbo proteges than blown SRT4's.

People are blowing them for the same reason a lot of people here are: poor tuning.....with a dose of stupidity.

Just like in our cars...you can't turn up the boost in an SRT-4 to insane levels...granted the level at which it becomes 'insane' is a lot higher for the SRT-4.

The SRT-4 engine can most definitely handle more power safely and reliably than our MSP's....but it's still susceptible...

I agree Jersey. Poor tuning and extra boost is never a good idea but guys running an exhaust, a wastgate and an intake are hitting 12's.

Just doing those tiny mods make it faster than a $35K supercharged Cobra. THAT's how I define "bang for the buck".

The threadstarter was asking about MSP upgrades though....here's my take on it:

Do an intake and exhaust and leave it alone. If you don't plan on rebuilding the motor or spending $1500 on a good ecu then leave the car alone. While it's a great overall car it's not the fastest by ANY means. If you wanted a race car you should've researched more first.

I installed my Injen CAI about 3 weeks ago. Pretty kewl stuff but I dun't think my car is that much faster. Anybody who buys it though will like the result. Next I'd like to install a downpipe. Should I buy a catless???(confused)

lol i dont think most of you understand how small our turbo is.

I dont give a s*** how fast it is!!!!!! ITS STILL A F*CKIN NEON!!! Engine might last but the doors will fall off in a year! (jerkit) And oh yeah, Its UGLY(upyours)

I agree its ****** ugly (SRT-4)....... and it will fall apart

Well if u want more power yes, get a catless downpipe, but let me warn u, the downside of having a catless is u will be iting up gas like carzy. personnely i don't have one but its basic knowledge cats won't be there to burn the gas that gets away

Best bang for the buck

The SRT-4 has a much better powertrain, but as most posts have pointed out our MSP's out handle the little Neon that could. Are cars are also nicer looking, and in my opinion, better built. My friend Craig bought an 04' Blue SRT-4, and for drag A.K.A. redneck racin' we don't hold a candle. As a matter of fact I've rode with him and he went neck and neck with an STI from a 20 mph roll allthe way to about 120.The STI's and Evo's weigh more than a Z06...3260 freekin pounds and have 100-125 less hp. So bang for the buck is definately the SRT4...but handling and styling we take home the cake.
(outie)

I can't say for all the neons, but the three SRT-4's bought by local AutoX'ers have all blown a motor. At our last event in November one of the SRT-4 guys borrowed my MSP as the dealership was waiting on his new motor. He was pissed, the axles lived 5,000 miles then the motor went at 6,000.

He was faster on a long-ish AutoX course in the MSP then he was in the SRT-4.

full disclosure:
I've owned '95 and '97 ACR neons both motors did a con-rod in the first 50,000 miles.

why is everyone making such a big deal about the power of the srt4. IMO Its ugly and slow. When I went to a track they were all running mid 14s. I even kept up with one and I only have intake lol!

Ok guys... we need to get back on subject.. The new guy isnt gonna gain anything from this other than the fact we all like to argue!!! (pow)

steering column pod?

does anyone know if there are any pods out there that i can mount on my steering column instead of mounting the gauge on my a-pillar?

Best bang for buck?
Hands down.
A cheap boost guage paired with an MBC.
Same results, moar better.
Nice Boost gauge(defi, apex, greddy), with an EBC, like a greddy profec B.

A downpipe would also be a great bang for buck mod.

yep , gonna start with a boost gauge and an mbc.
Beware....MBC is gonna allow more boost spike.. means that for a slight moment it will jump a few psi higher than your settings. Still a good mod but like mx3ownzj00 said..... the FMIC NEEDS replaced. If not first, at least sooner than later.

How much money do you have to work with as of now? That will solve a lot of issues.
