as for a waste of time... IMHO no its not.
they evened out the paint and took the blemishes off. All while sealing the paint and protecting it.
yes driving it will get it dirty again, but the hard work is done. when he goes to wash/wax the car it will be a lot easier to do and will still look better than a similiar vehicle without this treatment.
extreme? yes... but its nothing but great work. If he cares for his car even a fraction after this amount of work, his paint will look fresh years from now.
