More reasons why I avoid dealers like the plague...

Our 2k mile '08 Mazda5 has been pretty good so far, but I have noticed a slight vibration at certain speeds since we got it.

I didn't rush to take it in because I wanted to really get a good idea of when/why it was happening, and to see if it just went away on its own. After enough driving analysis, I concluded that between 68 and 72MPH, the vibration occurs. It's relatively minor. You cannot feel it from the front seats. I noticed it when looking in the rear-view mirror initially. You can see an empty seat in the middle row, shake.

I did a number of tests over the last few months, and found that no matter the road surface, no matter the PSI in the tires (I tried a little bit low and a little bit high), no matter the gear the car is in, no matter the throttle position or brake position, the vibration simply occurs between 68 and 72MPH. When I put my hand on the seat behind me, I can feel it (once again...it's not a major vibration, but still...it does vibrate). When I speed up past 72MPH, it's gone. Below 68, it's gone. If I stay between 68 and 72 for any period of time, it persists.

The only other problem I have noticed, is a slight squeak or crunch sound from the rear end when going over speedbumps. I wasn't really concerned about it. It sounded like a bushing that wasn't lubed, or was stuck.

I finally decided to take the car in to address the issues (mainly the vibration) because we are going on a long-ish trip soon. I dropped the car off and described the problems in detail, and how you can replicate them. I saw the service guy write down the problem in enough detail that I was comfortable.

I got a call later that day and they said that they had the tires rebalanced and that fixed the vibration. They also said they couldn't replicate the squeak. They asked to keep it overnight to try again in the morning. I said ok.

I picked the car up the next day and they admitted they couldn't get the squeak to happen. I really didn't care because I was concerned more about the other issue.

So here's how everthing turned out:

- I drove the car home. The vibration is completely unchanged. It still does the same exact thing.
- I was able to replicate the squeek/crunch in the next parking lot I drove in.
- They washed the car. Whatever they used, stripped my wax off.
- The car has a scratch on it now. It had no scratches before.

I have never had good experiences with dealers but I honestly figured since the car is basically new and under warranty, it was better to take it to them. They were nice and friendly along the way, but the results were nothing was fixed, my time was wasted, and new issues were created. I will probably b**** about the scratch and have them fix it. But I won't bother having them fix anything again. I will just fix it myself...and it will cost me money and time, but at least it won't come back worse.

sorry man, that does kinda suck.

just FWIW, as long as I can remember, my middle row seats vibrated back and forth at highway speeds... particularly noticeable with the headrests up. not that it means it should happen, but perhaps it's some flawed design concept rather than a problem with just your 5... I vaguely remember at least one or two others stating this too, but that would've been forever ago... maybe someone could confirm whether or not this is the case for them too? all that being said, my butt never felt a vibration, just saw it in the mid row seats.

wonder what the hell they used to wash your car?! virtually any decent quality auto soap is usually designed to at least preserve if not add wax to your car. lol, probably put a shot of Dawn in the bucket (eekdance)

don't ask them to fix the scratch... they'll pull out an orbital buffer and buff some swirl marks into your paint

Yea I've had similar experiences with most if not all dealers. I wouldn't let them touch my paint. Mine is all scratched up from them washing it all the time with dirty stuff and there also was NO wax on my car when purchased.

I also have this minor vibration and have not tried to locate it.

Mine vibrates in the same way. It never bothered me enough to look into it because I couldn't feel it. I recall seeing a TSB for cruising vibration that called for new motor mounts, but I don't know if that's related. Doesn't seem likely, since you tried a different gear at the same speed...

I think that vibe will be a tough nut to crack. Good luck.

On the dealership thing, I'd have to agree that the majority of my service experiences end up being a downer, too, for many of the same reasons you state. I just don't have the time or equipment to DIY anything more complex than oil/filter changes or swapping tires seasonally.

the only reason the vibration strikes me as odd is because it's ONLY from 68-72MPH. The car is smooth as buttah above 72 or below 68. But what entirely sucks is 68-72 is a REALLY common speed range. A lot of times < 68 is too slow and >72 is too fast.

And I know it's not a bad vibration, but if I put my hand on the back seat I can feel it. Maybe I'm just being too picky...but I've never had a car that vibrated except when I've had tires out of balance. Even my cars with coilovers, while rough over bumps, don't have vibrations at cruise on smooth surfaces.

I just wonder WTF it is.....

actuallly to touch on what nate said. theyll use a rotary polisher. an orbital is the safest way to polish paint, but cant do what a rotary can in skilled hands.

ive got a bunch of friends that are the lot attendants. they pretty much all tell me the same thing. the dealership buys the cheapest products in bulk.

I've been trying to trace a very minor vibration - which I thought was coming from the cargo cover, then I thought it might be related to the little table that folds out between the 2nd row seats (as it seems to go away when it's folded back in) - I actually had a buddy drive me around in my own Mz5 at lunch to see if I could trace it. Seems when I'm sitting in the back it goes away completely. Either way, I'll check to see what position the headrests are in.

As to the experience with the dealer - unfortunately - sounds completely par for the course based on my past 25+ years of owning cars and dealing with dealers - including two Lexus'. (Although I do have a couple of really positive stories about Lexus too.) All too often they're after the "low hanging fruit" of the problem - anything complicated/tough to resolve or fix - and you get some kind of simplistic answer, excuse or brush-off. Then it's back to billing you or your fellow customer for a $175 oil change because they also rotated the tires, changed the cabin filter and (supposedly) checked 40 other things - that rarely, if ever need work on a low-mileage car. And if it is a moderate or higher mileage car - then they do find some more work - maybe completely legit, maybe semi-legit - and bill it at exorbitant rates. I appreciate that dealers don't necessarily make a ton of money selling cars - but the way they stay in business with service is really awful.

Talking about that vibration problem i know all about it. I have a 2007 5 and it had a vibration problem and it went in for tire balance or they could not duplicate problem. It gets worst so I would be on top of it. Believe me....after 2 months of my car being in the shop and they still don't know what the problem is. So I wrote a letter to mazda because no one wanted to help us and now im waiting for my new 08 5 in replacement for my 07. Mazda is sending a top of the line engineer from japan to see what the problem is with my car.
Mind you they replaced parts like motor mounts, rotors, half shafts, tranmission etc......and the vibration is still there.
Just be careful.....

I normally do all the work on my cars. I try to avoid dealer trips at all costs. Pretty much every car that I've taken to a dealer, ends up worse off. I figured I'd give this Mazda dealer ONE shot to impress me. Unfortunately, they failed. It won't be going back to the dealer again.

Your car probably got worse because you kept taking it to them to fix the issue.

I mentioned this when I got the Mazda5, I was a bit apprehensive to purchase another Mazda because our '04 Mazda3 was at the dealer 10+ times in its first year, and nothing ever got resolved. My wife replaced that car with a WRX STi that had no issues whatsoever. She replaced that with a Honda Element that had improper alignment from the factory, but it was resolved without any issue by the dealer. Then she had a Honda Fit...no issues with it.

So I crossed my fingers when we got the Mazda5 because I REALLY liked the car, it finally seemed like the perfect type of car for us. I just hope it doesn't annoy me into getting rid of it prematurely.

jeebusm3 I am having a similar vibration issue. Mine is 60mph+. The steering wheel feels like there is too much play in it. If I let go of the steering wheel the car tracks straight but the wheels hops around left around right on its own. I have a parking tag on the rearview mirror that bobs around and the rear seats vibrate enough that small items on the seat begin to move around. The car has 1900 miles (1100 by me, came with 800 miles on it). It has been to the dealer 3 times. Each one balanced the tires. There are at least 9 weights on the passenger side rear tire which I think is excessive. I am coming from an Acura TSX that was much smoother and albeit at higher priced car. My wifes Prius and the rental Ford Focus I had two weeks ago are all smooth at all speeds. I email Mazda in hopes of getting something done. I don't drive much, maybe 100 miles a week so it's not as annoying as it could be if I drove everyday.

by comparison, my vibration is much less severe than that.

My wheel has no play, my wheels don't jump around, and my mirror doesn't vibrate like that.

Seriously, mine is minor...but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's annoying.

Maybe these stock tires are just garbage.

If I could work on my car believe me it won't ever see a service dept. They think were dumb and all they do is (jerkit). But your probably right the more i took it in the more screwed up it got. Im just hoping that this 08 5 won't give me any problems.

so did they lemon-law your old one?

MIatas are notorious for the "65mph shimmy". I did tons of stuff to mine to limit that (different tires, wheels, paying $$$ for "race quality alignment/wheel balance", chassis braces, etc) and it just got less noticable, but never went away. I think the consensus for those vehicles was there was just something about the car itself that resonated at that specific MPH and there wasn't much to be done to cure it. I would agree that the stock tires suck and could be a cause of the vibration, mine has different tires on the front now that also suck, but not as much as the 2 stockers that are currently on the back wheels.

that was a theory I had in my head as well. Something to do with the suspension geometry, vehicle dimensions, weight, spring rates, etc, etc....that all add up to create a resonance at a specific speed.

I would prefer that specific speed be >120MPH so I wouldn't ever have to deal with it though. (silly) since well....70MPH is a ridiculously common cruise speed.

Yes they sure did.....Also, whatever I put into my car like my exhaust, rims, viper alarm etc......they have to put it all into my 08 5. So there kinda (pissed) but I don't care.

I'm surprised they didn't hose you in some way for "modifying" the car. Especially since aftermarket rims could easily be a source for vibration issues....I assume they put stock wheels on your car to verify that was not the case though?

did you have hub-centric rings?

They had no choice since they put the rims on for us. Yeah and when they put on stock wheels the vibration was worst.
