More HU ?'s from newbie

Obviously I am a newbie to working on the 3. I have some questions that I haven't been able to find clear answers to.

What is the "trip function"
If I went for an aftermarket DVD reciver (not the car advanced style) just a pioneer or something of that nature. Will I loose my controls at the steering wheel.

Trip function, I believe, refers to the trip computer which is available in the GT trim models.

Also, if you want to retain your steering wheel controls, you need to be absolutely sure that the head unit you're buying supports it.

As already mentioned, the aftermarket deck will need to support it *AND* you'll need the adapter, like the PAC SWI-JACK. Make sure the adapter works with the brand of HU you buy, the PAC website is your friend.
