Mod help!

I have a 2003 MSP and I want to make a few mods to it. I want to let it breathe a little more by getting an exhaust and mods that won't make me lose any reliability. I was wondering what people thought about a smic compared to a fmic and how the ebay fmic's were. Does the high flow intake manifold make the car sound any better or hear any more turbo spool? I was looking at the street unit high flow intake manifold and wondered how much of a difference it made and what the difference from the exhaust manifold is. I also don't know in which order I should do the mods or which mods will benefit me the most. I want to be able to hear the car so an exhaust and stuff along those lines is what i'm thinking about first. I was wondering if anyone had the vibrant turbo back exhaust and how that sounded. I want a deep tone from my exhaust, I would like it to be as close to a subaru as possible. Love the boxer engines! My last question is how much of a difference a downpipe would make. I've read that the stock is very restrictive and found one online made by p.e.p. and it looks incredibly bigger. Was wondering if I would hear more turbo spool if I put on a downpipe as well. Thanks for all the help and sorry for all the questions! Just really could use some advice and guiding towards what parts to get and try to maintain a reasonable budget and not break the bank.

So, what I gather from that is that you want to hear your turbo spool... And don't want to spend money... And yeah... There's a FAQ on here that you should read.

yeah i want to hear more turbo spool and was wondering if a downpipe would help and getting the vibrant exhaust which has just one high flow cat.

Though I'm sure everyone will freak out, I run filterless on my intake side of the turbo. And it's loud as s***. I'm not telling you to do that, I'm just telling you what I do and that you can hear the turbo spool from a mile away. I was running against an STI and he has a 3" exhaust, with his windows up, he said all he could hear was my turbo spooling.

thanks for the link that helps a bunch and thats funny as hell. I was keeping up pretty well with my buddy in his wrx yesterday first time we went side by side and he was impressed i kept up how i did. Sorry for being so new to all the turbo talk and all that, Just trying to figure out the ins and outs of them. Do you know how much of a difference there is with the p.e.p. 3inch downpipe compared to stock?

the pep downpipe is definitely a great mod and you have come to the right forum for info on it as the person who makes them is on this forum. Any bolt on will help the car breathe better. FMIC over SMIC since it will still heatsoak which is a waste of time.

Thanks for the advice. I think im going to go with the vibrant exhaust and get the pep downpipe as a starting mod and work my way from there. Do you guys know if there are either of these for sale on the marketplace ive looked some but haven't found any. Also would you reccomend the pope downpipe with the flex or without? I have an off topic question but does the sti front lip fit our msp's i saw someone with a black msp that had one and it looked pretty good.

downpipe with flex, especially if you haven't upgraded the motor mounts yet. Also, check out corksport.com. They have a nice exhaust too.

Yeah ive been deciding between either the corksport or vibrant, I want the exhaust that has a nice deep rumble, i haven't heard from many people who have the vibrant but it seems like a good deal. And motor mounts is another thing on my mods list, Do you have them? I heard that if you just get front ones that the vibration isn't unbearable and makes a big difference in wheel hop.

I have solid AWR mounts. You will notice a small increase in vibes even with just AWR inserts but definitely tolerable. With all solid mounts, especially the rear, you will probably start it up once and never want to start it again..lol. But once the mounts break in, they are ok. I love em'. Front motor mount helps but you might as well upgrade all if you are going to install any. All of the stock mounts will fail eventually if they haven't already. Take a flashlight and look at the rubber on the mounts. They may have already broken. If not, they are already on their way there if they have never been replaced.

The start up is the most annoying thing and horrifyingly loud. It drives my girlfriend insane...

Hardpipes on intercooler upgraded downpipe & midpipe! Noise?? Cutout just behind oilpan and vented cf hood= Insane atleast at 25psi it is ;)

:) Make sure the exhaust is not just a catback... the midpipe is just as much or more of a restriction than the stock dp!

Its tough with so many choices for an exhaust! I want the one as close to an subaru sti grumble as I can get, I just cant get enough of that sound. Found some posts about the Perrin last night and heard good things about it, anyone know much about the perrin exhaust?

I chose not to go FMIC because my A/C has stuggled to handle the 110+ degree days since the day I bought it, and don't want to block the condenser at all. The CustomMSP SMIC was pricey but definitely helped. I also believe extra lag is unacceptable and the FMIC piping will definitely reduce throttle response.

A simple CAI will amplify the turbo spool 100x. I do love the way that sounds. I have the Injen which is pricey, but it's a quality part. You could probably make yourself something nearly identical with an Ebay kit, but there is something to be said for a well designed product. The hole in the engine bay that auspiciously leads in front of the wheel well almost seems like it was designed for a CAI. (It is actually because the windshield washer fluid resevoir is on the other side and Mazda used mirrored parts.)

It will also let the turkey free. The bypass valve Mazda used is way way too small to handle even the 7psi our car runs stock and the back pressure against the turbo when you close the throttle plate under boost will manifest itself as the infamous gobble sound that is normally muffled by the stock airbox. Some people love it, some people hate it, but there a few dozen threads on here dedicated to "killing the turkey".

I see no point in upgrading any of the exhaust unless you start at the turbo and work your way back. Otherwise you will increase noise without increasing performance which I believe if the very definition of "rice".

3" is overkill for any power the FS could safely deliver to the rest of its drivetrain, but it doesn't hurt anything. You'll just need to reduce it at the mid pipe unless you want to go 3" all the way back which will mean a louder exhaust and more chance for it to hit the crossmember or rear subframe and create an annoying rattle over bumps. Urethane hangars are also recommended and aren't too expensive.

I've never driven my car without motor mount inserts, it had rear inserts and an AWR front when I bought it. A couple years ago I put in side mount inserts and replaced the front AWR with a new stock mount and inserts. The result was nearly identical. After 6 years now I am sick of the vibration and bought a new rear mount, and plan on putting it in without the rear mounts at the next opportunity to borrow my friend's AC'd garage. My hope is that the other 3 inserts will keep the engine from moving around too much while having a stock rear will reduce the vibration to tolerable levels.

You've come to the right place. There is a lot of info to wade through, and the search feature isn't always the most helpful if you don't know exactly what you are looking for, so don't hesitate to start a new thread if you can't make sense of all the garbage. The server isn't going to run out of space for new threads.

I upgraded the rear motor mount a few years back to a full Medieval replacement. Should never have done it. When I'm criusing in neutral with the AC on, you can see the dash going up and down, the vibrations are so bad. So many rattles now all over the dash and shifter surround, its incredibly annoying. I need to find the stocker and put it back in one of these days...

Get the Corksport exhaust, it sounds absolutely bad ass.
