Military Personnel thread.

i will mention that coast gaurd ribbons are authorized to wear on the army uniform...so who knows, and who really cares. we all fight real or implied every day.
well ok their is a start, im not trying to be a dick, i just get upset when people say that the coastguard is not a military branch.

and hey, being in the coastguard counts for your total military time, military is military, im alittle confused as to where you heard this, and further more, if we are not military, then why do we get military benefits, veterin status, MILITARY ID'S???? im just looking for insight on this.

when i was in army retention school, where we learn how to computate someones total military service time, they told us coast gaurd service DID NOT count towards 20 year retirement, whereas if you were prior service navy or air force, it does.

i dunno bout that man, but also people dont leave the coastguard to go to the army, or navy, or marines, its the other way around, you guys come to us. we have more prior service then we now what to do with.

dude cut it out, we get the point, youre offended but i dont think thats what she meant.

the point is, there are three actual military branches: Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Marines are a part of the Navy and the Coast Gaurd is part of the Dept of Homeland Security (formerly of the Transportation Dept).

the three branches have their own departments (Dept of the Army, Dept of the Navy, etc). i think what she was saying is, you arent in one of those departments.

the way i personalyl judge it is, if i come from any of the five except coast gaurd and look on my new Army LES, i get credit for my time in the navy etc. i do not get gredit for my time in the coast gaurd, unless they changed it recently.
Interestingly, the Air Force falls under the same idea as the Marine Corps. It spawned from the Army shortly after WWII.

There is only the Dept. of the Army and Dept. of the Navy. Both of which are run by civilians.

However, most people say there are four branches of the military, Marine Corps, Navy, Army and Air Force. Most people do not consider the Coast Guard as part of the military because they were under the Dept. of Transportation (rightly so) and now under Homeland Security (a better fit given the current times).

Also, simply getting an LES does not make you military. Civilian employees get them too. They also get "military IDs" and retirement. I'm simply pointing out a fact, not starting an argument.

However, more to the point, THEGOLDPRO stop throwing a fit about it. Get over yourself...Its great that you have pride in your service, but you are severely discrediting your professionalism with your behavior.

goldpro, she was JOKING (hence the "lol" right after the statement), relax man, there was no disrespect.

WELL most people are ******* retards, how can you base your argument on most people???????, show me where it says the coast guard is not the military, and ill stfu,

and no civilians DO NOT get military id's they get civilian govt employee id's, not military, and they do not have military pay grades which we do.

and yes im getting pissed, if every one was dumping on your service, you'd be pissed.

There's CG a section in the Pentagon. I have to salute CG officers. I figure, who gives a flyin crap who they fall under dept wise, they are still a military branch.

I thought that I said it wasnt a personal shot at him. Goldpro relax. When I was in the military, you probably werent in the Coast Guard yet anyways. And back in the day (when I was in), the Coast Guard was under the Dept of Transportation. Every operation I've been on, there has not been not ONE C.G. deployed with us. However, we had Army AF, Navy and us (Marines). Your function is different than ours. You will never see a Coastie go to the front lines, fly an Apache or drive a tank. You're service enforces drug trade, immigration issues, and coastal protection. If you look up the history of the now Coast Guard, it used to be called several different things: Revenue Cutter Service, Lighthouse Service, etc. For the 210 years it has been around, only during a WW or recently Iraq, has the CG actually gotten near wartime combat. If you get a DD214 it should only have your active wartime activation only. Here's an exerpt from the official CG website:
In times of peace we operate as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation's front-line agency for enforcing our laws at sea, protecting our coastline and ports, and saving life. In times of war, or on direction of the President, we serve under the Navy Department.

No one said that what you did WASNT noble, and I kept reitterating the fact. And yes, I was joking around but if you want to take it seriously, than I'm sorry that you feel that way. I can understand WHY you feel that way, because every coastie I ever met got mad too. Apparently everybody from the other branches must tell you the same thing.

Yes, Marines are by direction, under the Dept of the Navy. Not during just wartime... but ALL the time. The AF were apart of the Army at one time also. Anyone who served under the main branches have no problems collecting benefits, like the GI Bill or disability either. The CG has to jump through hoops to get these. Every paper I've ever seen said if you were CG, you may or may not qualify. Apparently, the CG needs special permission or you have to actually be injured during wartime in order to even qualify for some of those benefits. I could be wrong, but everything just changed last year when they added the CG to Homeland Security. And as I said before, when I was in the military, you were apart of the Department of Transportation. Before that, it was the Dept. of Treasury. Before that it was under Bureau of Navigation, etc. etc. Here's also some figures for you:

depends on how you look at it man. the only difference from my Civilian ID and the ones my Marine Corps buddies carry is the symbol on it. Other wise my ID card looks exactly like a Military ID. and as for the pay grades i am a GS-11 step 4 (equivilant to a Captain). that sounds a lot like how my rank was in the Corp, except I was an E-4 with 4 years. it depends on how you look at it. and unlike the CG as a DFAS employee I actually fall under the Department of Defense.

No one is discredating what you do man. You put a uniform on everyday and keep our coast safe (usa) , you deserve everybodies respect.

and just for future referece. Like we use to say when I was in the Corps, Yes we are a tech a department of the navy. We are the MENS DEPARMENT. Its sad when our woman are mainlier then navy men and can still be hot to boot (headbang) (kissass) laracroft

Do0d im not saying you guys are discrediting the coastguard, all im saying is atleast 3 people have said that the coast guard is not a miliatary branch, which it is, im not taking it as a personal shot at me,

Even when we were dept of transpertation we were still military, this didnt just change last year, we have always been military.

And i know the diffrence between a civilian id, and my military id, im an E-5 with just about 4 years, im not demanding respect, im just letting the mis-informed know that we are military, and have been.

well its nice to know theres a few of us military guys here and ill be catching up with you guys in feb 2006 when i get back from iraq.
