You DO know that the Coast Guard is not military right??? Isn't it part of the DOT? lol (not pickin on ya btw)

But I still admire the work you do. Maine is not the easiest C.G. station considering how much work is required with storms, rough waters, etc. Especially since a good chunk of Maine's job production involves fishing and trapping.

bull s***, we are dept of homeland security, and under war times we fall under the navy, trust me guy we are military.and yes maine is no joke, their is no soft same here, its all rocks, so when you hit something its no joke.

Overview: The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a military, multi-missioned maritime service and one of the Nations five Armed Services. Its mission is to protect the public, the environment, and U.S. economic interests in the Nations ports and waterways, along the Nations coastline, on international waters, and in any maritime region as required to support national security. The 2003 USCG request is for a total appropriation of $7.1 billion, the largest increase in the services history. The Coast Guard plays an important role for the safety and security and the well-being of American citizens. A contributing factor to this substantial increase is a $736 million proposed lump-sum distribution to a newly formed USCG military retirement fund. This amount is the amortized unfunded pension liability for USCG military personnel.

Coasties were apart of the DOT since 1967. Before that, they were apart of the Department of Treasury. But it got transfered to Homeland Security in just 2003. Homeland security is still not D.O.D. They do assist the military when we request it (i.e. Operation Desert Storm in the past for port security and Operation Enduring Freedom most recently). They operate under the Navy only during war time and if requested directly by the President.

I'm an former Marine, I've worked with them a few times. After my cousin was a Navy seal he went into the Merchant Marines, which is kinda similar I guess. I don't know too much about his job. But I am familiar with the Coast Guard.

Oh and I'm a girl, not a guy. lol

I'm not coming down on him, just stating something that's already on the USCG website directly. If it's changed in the last year, then I guess it's changed, but that's how it's always been. Not trying to dog on him, I hope you know that. It's just been NOT apart of the military for over 210 years. Last year may have changed things.

My brother wanted to be a coastie in FL. He had the choice of being part of Wildlife & Fisheries Dept., INS, C.G. or this other marine dept or enforcement down there, I forget the name.. if I hear it, I'll know it. But I forget... must be me getting older. lol I have all the respect in the world for the guys doing C.G. I couldn't do it, simply because when I was deployed on ship, I liked the first few times out and being on it for about 2 months at a time. But after that, I couldnt wait to kiss the shoreline. Something about small enclosed spaces, JAWS and 25 ft swells that made me ill. Just not the job for me. Most people are probably 10 times the swimmer I am too. I wouldn't have traded my years in the Marine Corps for anything, but still, I would've been proud to have a Coast Guard Cutter protecting my ship and manning the guns along side us any day.

ok if its not military, then how is it that every month i get an LES???? how is it when i **** up im subject to the laws of the UCMJ?? trust me just because we are not DOD does not mean we are not military, were not the god damned cub scouts, i get the same military pay as you. have the same military housing as you.

United States Military Service Branches
No one group or unit can conduct the Nation's Defense in wartime. There are many components of the U.S. Military!
The main groups for these warfaring resources are called "Service Branches". I have provided these links so you
can see what each Branch is doing webwise to tell the world what they can do for their country!

The Commanding Branch I call The "Pentagon". This huge complex located in Washington DC provides the highest
level of command, control, and communication. The Highest uniformed commander is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
of Staff (JCS). Please visit my Top Brass Page for links and further info on this topic. The Commandant of the United
States Coast Guard reports to the Chief of Naval Operations during times of war or when the President so directs.

The Fighting Branches are: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

i didnt say it wasnt. i do know if you join the coast gaurd and say come to the Army or Navy your time at the coast gaurd does not count towards your total military service.

btw, if you go by THAT link, that means nothing. it has the marines as a sep branch when in fact the marines arent a branch of the military either. the are a branch of the NAVY. their LESs say "Dept of the Navy" if im not mistaken.

anyways, who cares, everyone here has either served or is serving their country, and thats all that matters. i dont think lara was trying to knock you at all.

well thats not the point, my point is that she said we are not part of the military, and she is wrong, im just stating the facts, and yes i take it as a insult. oh hey also wow military.com has us as a branch also, hmmmmmm weird
http://www.military.com/

dude cut it out, we get the point, youre offended but i dont think thats what she meant.

the point is, there are three actual military branches: Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Marines are a part of the Navy and the Coast Gaurd is part of the Dept of Homeland Security (formerly of the Transportation Dept).

the three branches have their own departments (Dept of the Army, Dept of the Navy, etc). i think what she was saying is, you arent in one of those departments.

the way i personalyl judge it is, if i come from any of the five except coast gaurd and look on my new Army LES, i get credit for my time in the navy etc. i do not get gredit for my time in the coast gaurd, unless they changed it recently.

so that means we are not part of the military?????? im just confused as to wheather or not my les should say cub scouts on it.

i will mention that coast gaurd ribbons are authorized to wear on the army uniform...so who knows, and who really cares. we all fight real or implied every day.
