Mileage on factory Dunlops

I have 16,000 miles on my '02 P5.

For those of you who have had your cars longer than I have, how many miles should I expect to get out of the factory Dunlops?

I drive mostly highway miles, and my wife drives it when we're in town here, so the tires aren't being used very aggressively.

I've noticed that it's tough to find a high-mileage tire in a 50 series, and those that I can find are so weak on performance that I wouldn't want them. Ahh, well.

I've got almost 15,000 on mine, and while they still look OK, it's hard to guess how much longer they'll go.

The first time any tire scares me even a little bit in the wet, they're gone, regardless of the mileage or the tread remaining. I changed out a pretty new set on my Miata shortly after I bought it.

I'm hoping to hold on until the selection in the stock size has a few more choices - Hopefully something from Bridgestone. I'm not buying another "Dunlop anything."

Most any tire, performance oriented or not, will last a long time if maintained properly. I can easly get 40,000+ miles out of a set of Z rated summer tires. You can drive the tires hard without being abusive. Spinning the tires is your biggest killer behind running low on air, not rotating and dive bombing into turns too hot forcing hard understeer. Keey your alignment checked too. If you are wearing a set of tires out in under 15,000 miles then you either.

1) Can't drive for s*** or
2) Enjoy autocross ;)

TIRE WEAR

RODSLINGER,

WELL I HAVE 17000 MILES ON MY MP3 AND HAVE YET TO BURN OUT OR REALLY DRIVE AGGRESIVELY ALOT. MY TIRES ARE IN GOOD ALIGNMENT AND THE AIR PRESURE IN FINE. YOU REALLY NEED TO LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU DO TO GET 40000 PLUS ON A SET OF TIRE BECAUSE I HAVE ALOT OF FRIENDS THAT ALL HAVE LOW PROFILE TIRES AND DRIVE WITH SENSE AND THEY SAID THAT THIS IS NORMAL WEAR!

i have 20500 miles, and my tires still look good. i'm thinking i might be able to get another 10,000 or so.

I choose #2. Less than 10K miles and I'm in need of a new set already. I figure after this weekend I'll put on the tires KatsMP3 gave me. I'll at least be able to drive in the rain safely again. :)
Gotta love a good autocross course, even if it is a little rough on the treads.

Calm down.... First thing I do is take off the OEM tires when I buy the car and get something better. I usually stick with Bridgestone Potenza's or Firestone Firehawks. Secondly, I drive hard but sensibly. Lastly, I'm not a teenager anymore. That goes a long way towards the life of a set of tires.

Hmmm, I have been wondering how everyone else's tires are wearing. Mine have about 7,900 miles and still look new. I have rotated them twice now and check the PSI once a week. I am hoping by the time I get ready for new ones, I can find some yokohamas or Bridgestones. I used Avid H4's on my old 90' Protege LX for autocrossing, and they held up great.

As far as wearing them out quick, you guys are lucky... My truck is on it's 9th set of tires... It has about 133,000 miles on the chasis, and it destroys tires. Now I have two extra on old rims for the track, which helps immensely. At any rate, like stated above, driving style, pressure, and bad alignment are the main causes of tread wear. Oh well, I like our factory dunlops, they have great handling characteristics in my opinion..

I just hit 4000km with my P5. When I'm done with the stock Dunlops I'll get a set of Dunlop FM901 or Kumho 712.

I'm just wondering about the tire rotation pattern. In the owner's manual it says to rotate them front to back. But most other FWD I had said to rotate the front ones diagonally <sp> to the back and move the rear ones straight up to the front. Are the 5000m directional tires?

the stock protege/protege5 tires are NOT directional, but the mp3 tires are.

I've got about 22,000 miles on mine. I think I'm gonna change out after winter time. I'll probably put on another 15,000 before then. We'll see what goes.

When I go to change the tires, I'll get new wheels and stuff. The thing I'm wondering about is brake wear.

WOW!!! You guys must be doing something right!
I'm keeping up the rep of our cars here in Phoenix, AZ, and having a blast doing it. Seriously, this car handles marvelously, skids with precision, and just go go go :D . I absolutely love it, but of course I only have 8500 miles on my car and about 2/3 or more are gone on my tires .:(

I have 20 000 miles on my SP9000's and I drive very agressively.... I got alot of tread left even after going to a road track twice.....

I just hit the 16,000 mile marker and my tread is a lot thinner than before..haha..Well, it's ok..I'll be upgrading to 17" soon...
street racing kills tires..
