Laser Blue Mazdaspeed Protege
I stumbled upon this on Evo forums.
Currently slated to be a 280hp AWD 2.3L Direct Injection Turbocharged 4cyl. The Mazdaspeed 6 will be a rival for the likes of the Subaru WRX/Sti, the Lancer Evo, and at the same time it will attempt to reel in more upscale competitors despite it's racier edge. Suspension guaranteed to be best in class.

They better make this, and if Mazda keeps it under $35k it will deffinitly be my next car.

They say it isn't going to be released in the states, which is an absolute shame, I'd love to own that vehicle.

That's *not* the Mazdaspeed 6 ... that's the MPS 6. They're 2 totally different things. MPS is the Mazda Performance Series, and they're only available in Japan as far as I know.

That's one of the phattest looking rides I've seen in a long time. If Mazda was able to (somehow) bring this thing here at those specs AND STILL keep the price reasonable ($35 grand or less) this car would be a HUGE hit. Anything more and you're in BMW territory... Compete against the likes of the Sti and Evo/offer similar performance with far better luxury appointments and you have a winning combination! Seriously doubt we'll see it though... just isn't a big enough market for something like this. The ONLY reason the Evo and Sti came over here was due to the success of the WRX. The ONLY reason the WRX came over here was due in large part to the success of Grand Turismo (and others). Those are rally cars... this is a family car. BIG difference. but hey... ya never know!! One can only hope...

Clarification

I just found this on the Mazda6 forum. I'm copying a post from one of their moderators, LBJay, hope he doesn't mind. :)

>>I emailed Bob Hall (father of the MX-5/Miata) asking him about Mazdaspeed and MPS.
Thought you all might be interested in his answer.

Hi bwob,

Just wondering if you could explain to me the difference between a
Mazdaspeed version of a car and an MPS version. People seems to
interchange the two names, but Mazda never seems to mix the two in
their press releases. Is Mazdaspeed add-on performance and style
while MPS major design and drive train changes? I'm thinking along
the lines of a MS Protege vs. the Mazda6 MPS and Roadster MPS.

If you have time for an answer, Thanks.

Jay

Reply from Bob Hall:

The MPS cars which Mazda has shown in Japan and Europe are variants
which have ben developed under the guidance of the vehicle's program
managers. MPS vehicles have been initiated and developed within Mazda
GHQ in Hiroshima.

The Mazdaspeed cars displayed at places like the Tokyo Auto Salon
have been developed under the auspices of the gang at Mazdaspeed
independently of input from the Program Manager or members of the
development team nominated by the Program Manager. Mazdaspeed is a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Mazda which has an off-site presence in
Hiroshima which adjoins Mazda's primary facility but is not part of it.

North American Mazdaspeed cars are different yet again, as they
(well, 'it', to be technically correct) was put together with less
input from Mazdaspeed in Japan since Mazdaspeed has no experience
developing componentry to comply with North American regulations.
Mazdaspeed in Japan has more of a supervisory role in the North
American Mazdaspeed programs. Unlike the Japanese Mazdaspeed
projects, Program Managers for the donor vehicles have a degree of
veto power over North American Mazdaspeed projects.

Hey chico2003, I know for a fact the Subaru is making Lagacy GT, 250hp turbo awd mid-size sedan in 2005. Sounds pretty close to what we have here doesn't it? My bet is that if Mazdaspeed Miata does well and Legacy GT sells well (I bet it will), the MS6 gets made. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

EDIT:
Albert, isn't the Mazdaspeed Miata being made completely in Japan at the Hiroshima plant? Maybe the two MS entities will begin to work closer, remember the North American Mazdaspeed is still pretty young so who knows what will happed in a few years.

Guess you guys never read ,y post about my disucssion with Kelvin Hirashi.(lead Mazdaspeed USA engineer) After the Miata speed. there are no other vehicles slated to be released in the states, under the Mazdaspeed banner.

With Mazda 6 sales being so slow, Mazda probably recalculating their sales numbers. I think they should make it, that way the car gets a better images, that is if all goes well. But considering that Mazda spend huge amount of money into advertisement of the 6, and not much response back, I doubt they will throw in more money for Mazdaspeed version. Also, Mazda will know now to make more cars with manual trannies. I can't believe that Mazda sold out all the manual trannied cars with V-6 this year, and that was only 40% of all 6s with V-6.

I've seen hints everywhere pointing to a Mazdaspeed 3. Then again, due to the warranty replacements that mazda has had to do , i can't see how they made any money off of these cars, so it might be true that their rethinking making another

hmmmmm

i dunno man, even tho the MPS has all-wheel drive, does it have the yore control and differentials like the WRX or EVO? EVO's can be one wheel drive on hard hard corners... WRX STI's bordering on the 300hp line, and so is the EVO FQ version with 301hp, i dunno if the MPS can keep up /w thos numbers

When I went to get a 6s 5-speed in Feb of 03 I could not find one. Yes I did a search through several dealers no go all gone.
It was either wait until they built one for me or get an MSP. Which I did.

I guess that forum is where turbomattyP got his disclaimer :):D
