I have a theory... the new Mazdaspeed 6 comes out soon with a turbo-charged 2.3L 4 banger from the 3, mated to a 6-speed tranny w/all wheel drive. Being this is the same base engine from the 3s... you can probably guess where I'm goin with this... it could stand to reason that swapping the turbo components, lower compression pistons, ecu, injectors, drivetrain parts, etc into a 3s would give you the same ground pounding 276HP (almsot the same as the HiBoost kit) and maintain factory reliabilty and gaining tremendous handling characteristics. Any thoughts????

estimated cost: $10k

Dont know where you are going with this. Either you talking about swappin ms6 parts into your 3s or talking about mazda producing a ms3 with parts for the ms6 parts bin. Well, if you were to do this the first thing in the way would be mazda parts department. You're looking at cost and availiblity of the parts for the turbo. Look at the msp and the cost of the system at the mazda parts counter. It is cheaper for protege owners to buy an aftermarket turbo kit that is better made. Engineers always want more than they can have. Many times engineering is lost to cost and other factors that make up final product. This design "engineering" happens all the time but are not part of aftermarket kits. As far as the awd system, with money anything is possible. I would think that the rear suspention would have to be changed/designed along with a driveshaft. The list would just keep going and going and driving the price to insane levels. Now the possiblity of mazda releasing a ms3 with the same compontents. God only knows and the staff at mazda, lol. But there would good reasons to come out with a ms3 and also good reason not. A good reason would be to offer something that would be competive in the sport compact market. I could see them leaving out the awd for that market tho. The sport compact market is now down to what? The Scion TC, Honda Civic Si, and the Cobalt SS. A 200-220hp fwd offering would be competive in that market. Making it an AWD vehicle could put it in the class of the wrx. This then would make it compete with the wrx, rsx, and others in that class. A class that mazda 3 doesnt need to be in with a limited production car. But does mazda really need something to compete with the new si and cobalt ss? Sales of the mazda 3 are really good at this point. The only reason to produce something like this would be recover sales. The top of the line version of a vehicle is only produced to gain sales of your cheaper line up. Production of the top of line vehicles in the inventory are typically 1/4 of the total production. The ms3 staying with the ms way of things would be even less than that. Automakers use the top of the line models to get your attention. To draw you into the showroom floor.

It might be a viable option 10-15 years down the road when you could find the parts used but for now it would be too expensive. The money you would spend turning your Mz3 into a custom MS3 could be better spent just buying a better car.

as to the non turbo part of your conversion, if you look at the volvo s40 it is based off of the same chassis, so with a little bit of creative thinking, i think you could do it. if you pull it off, you will have a bad azz 3 (cheers)

The engine from the MS6 is not simply the 2.3 from the 3s and 6i with a turbo on it. It is a totally different engine, only the displacement is the same. The biggest difference is the direct injection system. I'm not sure about the bolt pattern for the transmissions though so I have no idea if that would work.

It's not a "totally different" engine. Everything below the heads is the same.

how many thread are going to be started about this?

it would cost thousands upon thousands of wasted dollars to buy ms6 parts and have them installed. it is much cheraper and smarter to buy a hiboost kit, pistons, rods, lsd, etc.
