Mazdaspeed won't stay running.

Hey guys, I lost my license a few months ago for dui, so my speed6 has been sitting in the driveway. Long story short, the car keeps shutting down after it's been started. Any idea what could be causing this problem? I got the car back from the shop last May, I've jump started the battery, and as a last resort I charged the battery up again. Now it starts but doesn't stay started. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you jumped the battery incorrectly you may need to replace the battery and/or alternator. Factory batteries don't like being deep cycled.

Could also possibly be bad fuel, or clogged fuel filter.

my guess is bad gas. cant leave it sitting that long w/o some sort of treatment for storage.

ya, gas can go bad in just a few weeks!

(scratch) Aww sh*t, it's been sitting a few months. Dammit. If I put gas treatment in it now will that solve the problem?(doh)

no. drain and flush the fuel system. I recommend the dealer for this.

I agree....bad gas. Don't know that you can use a gas treatment to rectify the problem. It might be more involved than that unfortunately.jj

If you put 91+ Octane in it, as recommended, it should not be "bad gas".

Premium (93) Octane has sat in our track car WITHOUT aftermarket additives and has sat 8 months and still started and run our track car with no knocking/pinging at all. Now, can't say the same thing with regular. I've seen regular gasoline varnish in as little as 6-8 weeks.

Bad gas is *highly* unlikely. Thats more urban myth these days. As for a clogged fuel filter, that too is *highly* unlikely. Not only is fuel filtered multiple times, but many, if not ALL gas stations have fuel filters built into the pump near the top of the hose.

Anyway, crank it over and rev it immediately to 2-3k to see what happens.

I've done that, (idhitit) and it sounds great, but after you let off the gas it just shuts down.

I agree with the above statement. Try taking the battery out and taking it to a AutoZone or your local battery shop and have them test it to see if it is any good anymore.

A bad battery that won't hold a charge will make the car stop running.

I would do this before I started draining gas and changing fuel filters. A smoked battery seem much more likely than "bad gas".

If the battery were toast, however, why would the car start at all? It would start once jumped, but I would have thought that it would not start after that even if he charged the battery fully.

A bad battery would not cause the car to stop running once it is running. The battery is only used to start the car and run accessories when the car is off. A bad alternator will cause the car to die once the car is running. This has nothing to do with the battery if he can start it up.

i agree

+1 on the battery/alternator

Do as Killer1 said... take it to the dealer and have the fuel system flushed. That'll likely do the trick.
