Mazdaspeed axle back vs. RB catback

I know there's a lot of threads about exhaust, but I would like some direct input rather than having to search 5,000 threads. Anyone with an opinion based on experience please feel free to chime in on the following:

I need new exhaust. The muffler on the SR Motorsports system that was on the car when I bought it recently fell off. The weld where the pipe enters the muffler completely failed. Anyway, I think the tubing from the cat to just forward of the rear axle is in decent shape (on the outside anyway). I would like to get the Racing Beat system, but it is a little on the pricey side. Not a big deal, but if the Mazdaspeed (listed as sport exhaust on ProtegeGarage) axle back sounds pretty decent and doesn't drone, then I can save about $250. Any opinions? I don't want to sound buzzy or have any kind of droning at highway speeds. I have a pretty good commute every day, and I don't want to hear the exhaust for an hour.

RB vs. axle back

I had the axle back and hated it. It droned terribly, I hate to think what it would be like with my hard engine mounts. Get the RB if at all possible.

If you go axle-back, you need to find the Racing beat made for either the MSP or the MP3 and have it shortened to fit the P5....I recently got one for the MP3 and totally LOVE it....

The "MAZDASPEED" version AKA...Sports Exhaust at Protege Garage and on E-bay do drone at highway speeds....Made even more noticable and annoying with a header and high-flow cat...

You really can't go wrong with the Racing Beat cat-back....

Thanks all, you have pretty much confirmed what I suspected. RB it is. Also, that way I know everything from the cat back is brand new and good to go.

I've had both. RB for sure!!!! To me the MS muffler just made a ton of noise but no real gain. Not that I expected anything from just a muffler, simply the fact it made so much drone. But others love the sound of it.....so it all end up in personal preference that you have to experience to understand and choose for yourself.

i know what he got :p

Hey Liquid! Thanks again for your help!

Racing Beat catback in the mail and on the way from Ken and Co. at ProtegeGarage. Can't wait to put it on. Kartboy hangers on the way too.

Next up, struts and alignment.

I have a header, catless midpipe and a catback off a MSP. I constantly get comments how good it sounds (even from people that say they hate imports) but it does drone but it doesnt bother me I dont even really notice it.

catback off an msp.. you realize that aside from the muffler it's the same as what your car came with stock, right? Between your midpipe and axleback is teeny stock piping still :)

that being said, a full exhaust, even just a 2.5 (2.375ID), is VERY loud on a Protege5.

Any sound clips of the RB exhaust system installed on a stock P5, no header. What are Kartboy hangers? stiffer rubber or poly perhaps?

Yup, poly. I don't know if you can buy them anymore? with my mazdaspeed axleback it slid side to side a lot with the stock rubber hangers.

Do a search, there's a lot of info. on the site. When I get mine installed I post a clip because I'll be totally stock except from the cat back, and it's gonna stay that way.
