I've read through many posts across a few different mazda forums, including this one, and have seen an array of different problems (big and small) from owners of the MS3.

The purpose of this thread is to simply get a feel for what problems seem to be the biggest and most wide-spread.

So far, for me:

Disappointing gas mileage (280 miles/tank regardless of driving behavior).

Clunking sounds from the rear suspension while driving over uneven roads.

so let's hear 'em

mines been peeeeerfect, the only wierd noise ive noticed its been doing it since i owned the car but its hard to notice. When i shut the car off and I open the hood if you listen in front of the intercooler there is a a mechanical moving sound and its squeeking louder lately? anyone else heard this? shut the car off go listen to the interlcooler for 30 sec see if you hear it

The clunking you have is an issue. Not sure if you know that our not, but if not you need to go to the dealer and have them fix it. Its the rear swaybar connection on the right side that gets lose and if you don't get it fixed it will booger up the connection and cause more damage.

280 Miles is not bad as that is an adverage of 21-23 MPG. For me thats better than my RX8 which is like 13MPG (confused)

EDIT: Ah I see you're just wanting to list them. May I suggest if you're going to do that then also post a link to the forum post most relevant to the topic.

I had something similar happen with my car. I had the car turned off and my roommate was in front just standing there. The car had been off for like a minute or so and then out of nowhere, this really loud squeak or something came from the engine. She actually jumped back like she saw a rat. (cabpatch) I told her the car bites and to be careful.

MPG Issues

The gas mileage is directly related to engine maintenance conditions, ambient weather conditions, and right foot conditions!

I've seen 31-33 mpg on the highway by keeping my foot out of it, and I've seen 10mpg on the city when in "GO!" mode. This is the very nature of a turbo car. Power when you want it, but you must PAY TO PLAY. keep your foot out of it, and you'll find yourself averaging 23-25mpg easy.

The suspension clunk is just crappy though. I don't think its happened to me, but during my next dealer visit it will be mentioned for checking.

To add to your list:

- Strange squeak coming from a currently unknown area in the engine bay. Only detectable during engine shutdown when warm, or when tooling around at near 0mph. This squeak is pissing a lot of people off, including us.

- Occasionally your engine will fall out! Haha! J/K of course except for those it has already happened to. Mine did it at 6200 miles or so. That comes from a weak Transmission mount, and should be checked ASAP if you've got an 07 car. If you are modifying your car with new mounts like the TRZ or AWR, you probably need to check this mount point personally quite often. It has been recognized as a loosening point, potentially disastrous at that.

- Brake rotors tend to warp all to easily. It happened to me at 11,200 miles and seems to be a recurring problem to others. Unsure of what causes it, but it is annoying. The brake pads themselves seem perfectly capable of regular to hard duty, and the car stops better then most WORLD CLASS cars.

- The stock head unit on the non Bose models doesn't easily integrate properly to aftermarket audio equipment. This is because the stock head unit has a frequency attenuation (roll-off) on its outputs, and this greatly affects the sound quality of aftermarket amps, speakers, etc. The rear outputs are 10X worse then the fronts, but the fronts still aren't exactly flat. The rolloff looks like a plateau, with a steep drop-off on the low end, and the high end, especially the rear speakers. The fix for this is to first run a tap to only the front outputs, leaving the rears to rot (since most good sound systems don't need them), and to run some sort of compensator, processor, EQ, etc. That will bring everything back in line!

- The paint flat out sucks. Big time. It is quick to chip and show primer or worse. A Mazda feature, I've noticed.

- Turbo seal failure. I've not had this one happen to me, but its common. Typically noticeable immediately after installing a Turbo-Back exhaust upgrade.

That's all I can think of for now. I love my car, and I wouldn't trade it for another unless it was of a car that was 3x the cost. That's how good it really is. But still, s*** goes wrong on it like all other cars!

Paint always seems to be an after thought for Mazda. Its like...we've just given you this amazingly performing car, you want it painted now? You mean we can't deliver it primered?

i get that sqeeky noise when i turn my car off sometimes also along with some kinda clanking noise, the squeeky noise sounds like an old door hinge or something and it happens when the engine is warm and not right away after i shut it off

thanks for the info.

i live in orange county, ca and i know that the traffic (and horrible road/traffic control designs) is to blame for some of my bad gas mileage.

but, i figured it would be a tad better. i'm not complaining about it, though. 280 lb ft does not come without a price. i drove my vw r32 for a few years and sometimes got 15 mpg around town; this is an upgrade.

does anyone think a stock reflash would do the trick for the mpg? maybe a new coolant sensor? just curious.

coolant sensor was a VW thing. Go GREENTOPS!

I haven't heard of anything like that for the Mazda.

my avg. mpg reads 28.3 on the sport with trip computer trick. i drive 33 miles one way to work 5-6 days a week. Prolly 85% highway @ 85-90mph with plenty of "play" to get around traffic. So definitly no MPG issues from what I can see. I hear a couple of squeeks hear and there but nothing major. Just broke 10k miles on it and it seems like I just got it yesterday

God damn horrible crunching noise from the front and rear suspension when its cold out side...... Have an appointment on the 11th.....

a VW thing for sure. i've noticed a large amount of black "soot" around the exhaust tip, so I figured it could be a coolant sensor/running rich problem.

btw, great signature

Another thing I have noticed, a cloud of smoke when nailing the gas at highway speeds. There is a place on 275 (malfunction junction) here in Tampa that I usually speed up at to get around some cars. About one out of five times, there is a big cloud of whitish smoke that puffs out the back when I drop it in fourth and shift into fifth. I only have the MS CAI.

I know poeple had a problem like this with the CBE...anyone else with just a CAI?

yep thats the sound like an old door hinge at the front of the intercooler moving around about 20 seconds after shutting the car down

hey guys i've just gotten my 08 cosmic blue spd3.240miles..but havent had any of those issue yet..and i hope not either in the future..the only thing i notice when i shut off the car after a long ride is the cooling fan comes on for about 30 sec..is that the noise u guys hearing??
and yes i do think the gas miles sucks..premium is too expensive..
guys leave the car stock and u wouldnt have any issues..loll..

Actually Cosmic_spd3 if you are modding you'll get better gas mileage, IF you don't put your foot in it as often.

A better breathing engine translates directly into a more efficient engine.

Changing the intake to an SRI or CAI will net a slight change, and a lot of people comment on better mileage with things as simple as lightweight wheels! Amazing, but true.

I hear you fourthmeal..i was only gonna upgrade with the CAI for now or just throw a K&N filter in..does anyone know of any increase with just a K&N Filter mod.??I love the way the car feels stock,so i could imaging how it feels after a few mods..
but i would tell anyone that putting that CBE on a turbo car would soon cause engine smoke..am just gonna enjoy it the way it is for a lil while..am in new york now and is cold so the cold air is enough to make a lil more power.

This won't help the OP's post, so I'd recommend either making a new thread about your question or, the much more quality answer, use the SEARCH system and you'll find that this very issue has been discussed quite a bit.

From a basic point of view, though, I can tell you that our stock airbox is very restrictive, and the simplest of mods towards opening the intake up for more flow will result in improved performance and economy.

Lastly, I recommend either the Cobb SRI or CP-E CAI as replacements for the stock airbox, OR cut the stock airbox up (again, SEARCH) and get a bit more flow in there. The drop-in filter is an option at this point, but for the money you'd have to closely consider the Cobb SRI.
