Mazdaspeed 3, owned for 30 mins and already a check engine light

That's right. I drove it off the lot and on the way home I got to be possibly the first Mazdaspeed 3 owner to experience a check engine light. I wasn't driving hard, I didn't stop for gas, I didn't do anything out of ordinary. I have a feeling it might have been on at the dealership and I just overlooked it, or maybe I really have forgotten how to drive a stick after 4 years of having an automatic (doubtful). Either way I'm pretty upset. I'll let you know how it goes.

Might be a problem with the gas cap like CX-7.

my guess is gascap, someone probably didnt close it right. in any event, make the dealership your FIRST priority tommorow, and make sure you call them (if possible) to let whoevers around aware...

EDIT : (It only makes sense to be the gascap because A) Im sure they filled it up right before you got it and B) it takes atleast 2 drive cycles of incorrect evap pressure to trip the CEL, which would fit right in with your timeline) You dont know the car, if you owned it for 6 months I might tell you to handle it differently, however you dont know the "normal" sounds of the car. It could be something else (even though I doubt it) but its better to be SAFE rather than sorry.

That sucks dude, hopefully its just a scare and nothing serious.

I don't think you are the first. Another guy got the CEL right after he filled up with gas. I think it's the Gas Cap.

@randyscycle
I couldn't drive it to the dealership right away since they stayed open late to finish up my paperwork. I was able to get someone from the service department on the phone, but they didn't have any techs in anymore. It'll be my first trip tomorrow morning, already called the office and let em know.

@B1GHAM
I really hope it's nothing serious. I didn't notice anything that sounded iffy, and it drove like a dream so here's to hoping that it's no big deal.

[edit]: @RODSCALIP5
Lets hope so, the sales guy told me to be extra careful about that, I know it wasn't me since the needle is still above the full line. :)

i had it happen too. but it took a couple of days for it to happen to me. my dealership said " if it isnt driving bad it is more than likely a false code, and we would rather have you drive it for a week or two to clear itself out than make you pay $100 to clear a usless code." its been a week for me and it still hasnt changed so im going in to get it checked. ill post later to tell you what it was.

a $100 charge to clear a code....the car is under warranty....find another dealer!

prob gas cap but all charges especially in the first 90 day imo should be 0.00!!

Just go to autozone and have them scan it if you dont have an ODBII scanner at home. That'll clear up any confusion as to whats causing it.

$100?! F' that.... buy an OBDII Code Reader off eBay because it comes in handy and they only cost like ~$50 shipped? HarborFreight had them for ~$30 for the smaller version but you could easily go to Autozone and have them reset it but if it were me. I would take to dealer that won't charge you to look into it. Its brand new you should have to pay anything. This way the CEL is filed in the cars paperwork for future reference.

your car is under waranty and you will not be charged to read a code especially on a brand new car. It is probably your gas cap as several other ms3 owners are having the same issue and it is a common problem with the cx-7. The CEL is only serious when it is blinking otherwise it is just a pain in the ass. It will probably take a couple of months before mazda finds a real way to fix the problem so you might as well just pull the battery cable and reset the computer, until there is a TSB for the problem.

90 days try 3 years or 60,000miles, thats the basic warrenty so you can't have less than that.

bumper to bumper is 3 year/36,000miles powertrain is 6/60,0000. I would inform mazdausa if they are trying to charge you

This Is bulls***, Take Your Car Back To The Dealer Tomarrow And They Have To ******* Fix It For Free!!! Your Car Is Under Warrenty!!!

Sorry I didn't post this earlier. On my way to work the next day the light went OFF, I still took it in to the dealership, they weren't able to do anything for me. I'm not too concerned about it anymore, they gave it a full once over and everything came out perfect.

Oh, I noticed they never gave me an antenna, so that's on order... and the car is already starting to pull slightly to the left on highway speeds. :( I'll be taking it back in for that when my antenna comes in. It never ends.

not to sound like a smartass, but are you sure youre on a level road? roads are not always flat, and most of the time have a SLIGHT curvature on them to make sure there isnt any water buildup on the road.... just a thought. Other than that Im sorry for the issues... I hope all ends up well!

Positive :)

Thanks for stating the obvious, but yes, i'm positive that I was on a level road. 1000% positive.

I don't want to give anyone the wrong impression, this car is absolutly badass. I love everything about it, I've just had some unfortunate luck. No worries though, I'd still recommend this car to anyone.
