Mazda5 vs. Mazda6 Hatchback

All right guys, heres my dilemma, my wife and I are seriously considering moving from a 05 Accord Sedan to either a 5 or a 6 5-door (hatchback).

We currently have a 1 year old girl and planning on having a second (and last) child in a year or two. What we are primarily aiming for is more utility, we frequently go on weekend trips and small vacations. Both our parents live about 5 hrs away. I do like my manual 4 cyl Accord for its combination of ride/handling/performance and fuel economy but I find that when we pack it up to go on these excursions I would appreciate more room for cargo, the stroller, luggage, toys and whatever else we bring along always seem to fill the Accords trunk pretty quick!!

This is why Im considering a 5 or a 6 hatchback, I know the 6 wagon would be the better choice but I really want to stick to a 4 cylinder. Fuel in Canada aint cheap!!

For those that have owned or driven both of these 2 vehicles, which one would fit my needs better if what Im looking for is primarily more luggage space. Also, for those would I notice a significant difference coming from an Accord Sedan? Id like to see the pros and cons of both

Wife has a 6s five door, it has just a bit less cubic cargo feet in the rear than the wagon, which I have. My wife has had her sister and her two kids in their car seats in her hatch, along with their luggage.

It all depends on what you want/looking for. You can't go wrong with either vehocle.

The 6 5 door has a huge trunk. I also drove the 5 in manual and automatic, it's a very nice drive.

Get the 5, it's built in Japan has a much better build quality. You wont regret it.

I would second that. Not to be unpatriotic, but given a choice between an American-made Mazda and one made in Hiroshima, I'd pick Japan any day, just for build quality.

get the 5. with the amount of stuff that kids have (when you have your second) you'll appreciate the space. i wish our 5 was a 5spd, though.

Mazda5. Protege5's are usually abbreviated to p5 or mp5.

Having owned a Protege5, and recently test driven a 5GT and a 6GS wagon, I'd get a 6 Wagon over the 5. Yes it's more money, but it has more useable cargo space, better handling, more power, better quality interior, is easier to see out of, and seems to be all around a much much better car.

The only thing that appealed to us about the 5 was that we might be able to take a couple of our kid's friends with us somewhere, but other than that, the third seat is pretty useless and with it up, there is no room at all.

I also found that the A pillar on the 5 to really block your view during left turns due to the width of it and the severely raked windshield.

The 5s look nice, but I think the 6 is a better choice for families.

Get the Mazda 5. The 6 hatchback is nice but does not offer nearly the flex in loading people and cargo.
