Mazda5 mention in the WSJ

There was an article in the June 25th Wall Street Journal about slumping car sales.

The money quote is:

The Mazda5 is the only vehicle in the midsize-van segment whose sales are up this year, apparently because it is smaller and cooler-looking than other minivans -- and it has better fuel economy.

Interesting article. I see the similar sized Kia Rondo is up over half (50%) as well. I think it shows that consumers are making smarter choices.

Plus, let's face it, there's not much out there for a family on a budget that need some room. even an Altima/Camry sedan is as much or more than a Mazda 5 and seats 5 at most. The Rondo and 5 can seat 7/6 and with a more typical 2-4 on board, have room do haul some lumber and larger items.

Sure there are things like the Mazda 3s, Scion xB and Matrix/Vibe, but you are still seating 4, maybe 5 if they really are close to eachother. But again, luggage space it at a premium with 4 on board in most of these vehicles.

The really interesting thing is the continued lack of advertising for the Mazda 5. I mean I can understand people flocking to say the Ford Focus as there are huge ad blitzes (even if I don't get the mentality of buying what is essentially a "brand new" 5+ year-old technology car.)

The 5, while having decidedly Japanese styling, is for the most part a very classy vehicle at it's price point. Most anything that comes in cheaper will have steel wheels, more basic interior, less features, etc in comparison.

What I have found interesting in my time here (less than a year) is the types of people buying 5s. Some, like myself are younger families starting out. Many, however are coming from BMWs or Acuras into the 5. Not typically a move you see when dealing with a cheaper car. I love that my base sport basically looks as good as a high end GT model (to those not clued in to the subtle differences).

I mean honestly, I would never spring for 17s on a car if it were an option due to the cost/benefit ratio of larger/fancy rims. Yet our 5 has nice wheels and tilt/telescoping wheel. Plus, a car this cheap shouldn't handle this well at all! Certainly a Camry isn't near as fun of a ride. Perhaps an Accord would be pretty close.

But most of all, gas prices or not, I have a car that looks great, drives great, is good on gas and does make me embarrassed to pull up to the store because its a "minivan"

I am one of those Acura to Mazda5 converts. I came from a Acura TSX W/Nav. I didn't give up too much. I bought a 2008 Black GT without Nav. I added a Pioneer D3 w/bluetooth and XM. I then installed the OEM autodimming mirror with homelink (had homelink on my Acura), tinted the windows super dark, rear bumper cover, cargo cover, all weather mats and the rear cargo mat.

We don't have a family yet...but are thinking about it. Since my lease was up we figured we should get a "just in case" vehicle. We looked at the Scion XB and this. The 5 was waaaaay more bang for the buck.

Sounds great how about some pics..... BTW why don't you start your family in the 5 lol jk

I still remember when I bought my 06 that some articles positioned it as the minivan on a budget (if you don't have enough $$ for a real minivan, you can...) LOL

NOW it is cooler than the rest and the best since sliced bread because is gas savvy... which is true, but it is convenient to say it now, innit? (blah) :D

I'm happy that sales are up, but, yes, May sales were up 46% --- but they only sold 2,072 Mazda5s in the US. For comparison Toyota sold 51,291 Camrys (of which 5,999 were hybrids) in May. Unless Mazda starts doubling or tripling their sales of you'll still see far more Azteks on the road than Mazda5s :-).

I agree with you mrbwa1, the car rocks and Mazda could sell a lot more, but why aren't they advertising?

It's puzzling.

More Azteks? That thing came out of a cartoon, serious :D

Somebody mentioned here that the production is in full swing in Japan and China and for the US is not the cash cow so whatever they sell is good for Mazda, so no need to stretch production.

It is funny about the Camry because I compared the Mazda5 to it long time ago, while I love my cars I don't want to see 30 Mazda5s on the road when driving and 25 Mazda5s parked at the mall next to mine when I go shopping, I want my cars to be more unique. That is what I see today for the Camrys (and to some degree Mazda3s and Mazda6s).

I had an Aztek...actually 2 of them. They were company cars when I worked field repair for NCR. They got them cheap ($12500) the first time and even cheaper the second time. They actually drove very nicely and got 20-22MPG hauling 200-400 pounds of computer equipment and tools. The only bad thing was they never put the company logo on the car so everyone thought it was mine!

I think it all depends on where you are at. I don't see quite so many Camrys in my area, though they are out there. Right now every 10th car I see is a Prius! I am seeing a lot more 5s as well. Not enough to make it common, but enough to make it borderline unique. Then again, I rarely see other purple (er blue) 5s. And when winter comes around, I seem to be the only one on the steelies.

stillageek: Glad you like your 5. Hopefully my base 5 sports doesn't dilute the value of your GT too much!

Funny that you mention the Prius, somebody lifted the rock where I live, there are tons of them npw, remember reading that the production is really stretched and the waiting periods longer for those things...

And just yesterday saw my 2nd purple Mazda5. I now see 1 Mazda5 per day or so...

Yeah the Prius are completely out of reach these days. My parents decided to buy one in May and lucked into one in transport. Had to buy is sight unseen and wait a week. And then the dealer delivered it because people were trying to to buy it off the lot as it was being unloaded. Now the wait is something like 4+ months. Incidentally, the Prius they got the second week of May has a build date of 04/2008 and it's supposed to take something like 3 weeks from start of production to reach the dealer. That's what I calla NEW car!

I'm glad someone posted on that. I saw it but ran out of time to do so. I really feel like I hit the big time. My taste has been totally validated (for once) by the market place. So rare since I usally like things 4 cylinder, sprung hard and boosted to 20psi. So it's nice for a change!

Good on us!

AW

Good for you guys, the 5 and Mazda...About time people acknowledge that the Mazda5 is a very worthy and very cool Family Hauler! (2thumbs)

^^ Thx, it is indeed (plus I no longer have to support the Mazda5 cause by getting a 3rd one for my little one (lol2))

Yeah i love my MZ5 Still. Im getting better MPG's now that i stopped driving with a lead foot. Instead of driving with climate control on, i pop up the sunroof (not open just popped up) and open the vents and its saves me $$$$
Its awesome thats its selling more and you can tell when driving around, theyre popping up all over the place. But i wouldnt exactly call them common, i still see more people driving 7 series bmw's more. ;)
