So what will it come to when i drive at 100KM on the highway?

What's interesting is that the smaller 2.0 engine revs at a lower number than the larger 2.3.

In addition to the gearing, and the final drive, I think the stroke would have to something to so with it too.

thx alot guys

anyone else got more info

i remeber someone on this forum said the P5 gear ratios are the smae as the Mazda3:confused:

The ratio's for the 5 speed on the 3 (both engines..) and the P5 are the same.

I remember on the test drive the rpm's on the auto GT were a little lower than mine, maybe a few hundred rpm..

Mazda 3:

Transmission 5-speed manual w/ overdrive, Optional: Sport mode AT w/ overdrive
GX, GS GT
Transmission 5MT 4AT Sport 5MT 4AT Sport

2nd 1.842 1.497 1.842 1.497
3rd 1.310 1.000 1.310 1.000
4th 0.970 0.725 0.970 0.725
5th 0.755 - 0.755 -

Reverse 3.166 2.648 3.166 2.648
Final drive 4.105 3.683 4.105 4.416

Protege (ES/P5)

leungwingkei,

The transmission gear ratio and the final drive ratio along with the rolling diameter of the tire determines the rpm of the engine at any given road speed. The length of the stroke has no effect on this parameter but it does determine the piston speed in ft./min. at any given rpm.

Doh.

If the top gear for the Mazda3 presents the same higher than necessary RPMs as my ES, that unfortunately writes off my consideration of this new car, as I've been very unhappy about this characteristic in the Protege.

I've long thought the ES runs much too fast at standard, comparatively slow highway speeds (65-75 MPH). This creates more noise than is necessary, and it also hurts fuel economy in a car that presents rather mediocre performance in that area to begin with. In my efficiency opinion, at 70 MPH a car should run at 2500 RPM, like nearly every other car I've ever noted at that same speed.

I quite respect that some people don't mind this characteristic, but I don't understand why Mazda continues to sacrifice established common sense in that regard. It defies efficient reason and civility, and bothers me to no end.

I hope ultimately that top gear RPMs are controlled in the Mazda3...
