that is protegev car.. he lives in maryland..

also, coolest thing...
I went to the grocery store the other night and pulled into my spot and got out. The "buggy guy" standing at the front door to help you with groceries asked me what I had on my car.. it really caught me off guard so I was like, you mean the exhaust? He said yeah... and I told him that I have the mazdaspeed exhaust with the AEM intake... he was impressed with the sound. :D

Yes, the sedan and 5 are different. The P5 tailpipe is shorter.
sedan is about 5 inches longer. i had the sedan pipe for my 01' ES and had to chop a piece off of the tail extension to fit my P5. looks nice and is loud/dronning above 3k.

do U mean chop off a piece and re-weld the tip? did U have a shop to do that? how much does it cost? thanks!

$20 at a local muffler shop....did a clean job. Weld has over 38K on it! They cut it about 2 inches after it comes out of the muffler then took five inches off the end piece, then re-welded it back. Took under 30 mins....

thanks, that's a good news.

1. I wish the Protege version filled the cutout as well the Protege5 version
2. I bought the right one for my LX...
Since I spend the better part of 60 miles roundtrip on the freeway, I didn't like the aforementioned droning. So I put one of these in:

...except mine is the two disk model meant for racing. It doesn't restrict flow, just disrupts resonant waves in the exhaust. It was just enough to cancel the droning without impacting flow.
Now it sounds great...not much louder then stock, just a deeper tone. The only time it betrays it's nature is in-gear, off throttle coasting...it gets a little "boomy".

looks similar to silencers and should work the same way. interesting. how much does it cost? how did U just "put" it in (the tube)? thanks.

It's about $40 from Summit.
I slipped it into the pipe right before the muffler and put 4 little tack welds to hold it in place.

It's the same concept but different from silencers in a couple important ways:
the discs are perforated, not solid
the through pipe is severely fluted, not smooth

Hey Cloudland,
I'm planning on getting a catback from the US too. Thanks for doing all this research for us aussies :D I also had a feeling that the P5 exhausts would stick out a bit on the SP20 due to our shorter bumpers. Have you installed your muffler yet? Any pics? I wanna see how much it actually sticks out...
cheers!
p.s. the p5 bumper looks so much better than ours!

Hi coldie123

i chose economy post which takes at least 4 to 6 weeks. and i doubt it might take longer then that. however, the guy at ebay and i did measured the tip - from the end of the tip to the body of the muffler, my stock muffler on the SP20 has 5 cm, American P5 has 7 cm, the Mazdaspeed has 8 cm. we didn't measure the distance from the body to the hanger, it looks on the Mazdaspeed the distance is also greated than on SP20.

this link might help to visually check the difference - yes the P5's rear bumper looks better, and should work better in case of an impact.

about Cats, most i saw don't have pre-weld hangers for P5, U might need a weld work anyway. U can ask them the length, say for the axle back, and do a measure on your car. i know this can be troublesome. i'll let U know as soon as i get my muffler.

Hey, thanks for the info. I'm planning on getting the racing beat catback for the P5, so hopefully it should be a straight bolt on to the SP20.

update: got my muffler this morning, but i'm having a road trip today, and i havn't find a trolley jack yet. i'll see if i can install it in the weekends.

Damn it's been awhile for you. I purchased mine and it arrived in 5 days. Very easy to install.

I got mine from that same vendor, shipping was about 4 days after I ordered it and that was during the x-mas rush. (ordered the 22nd recieved the 26th).

That vendor listed at the top is a Mazda dealership. Great comunication (even if he did try to push a MS shift knob on me :D) Shipping was like $18 from Tenn. to Texas. They also have the MS axleback for the MP3's. All in all, I would buy from them again if they had something I needed or wanted.

yeah right, USPS website quoted 4~6 weeks of ground shipping to New Zealand, but it actually took 8 weeks, as a guy in OZ warned me of the Xmas and New Year holidays.

i'm waiting for a Eibach pro-kit, which also shipped via USPS ground. i guess it'd be 8 weeks plus. :(

the guy - nelsonmazdaparts is quite nice actually, he asked me if i was interested in other items but repeatedly mention that he's not being "pushy" but it could save me more with one shippment. He also threw in a cap with "mazdaspeed" stitching and a zoom-zoom decal. :)

i'll probably go get a cheap trolley jack and jack stands today and try my luck. still no idea if the tip would extend out like mad on my car - U guys in the state has a longer rear bumper if U wonder.

Keep in mind that probably 7 of those 8 weeks are spent just sitting around in a customs warehouse waiting for the item to be checked, and the carrier has no control over how long it sits. It took 3-4 weeks for my TWM short shifter to make it down here from Canada via FedEx. I had the tracking number so I was watching it and all but one week it was just sitting in Albany, NY.

ugh i had a bad day.

went to local automotive parts store and saw this floor jack + jack stands combo for NZ$59, but they sold out. i went back home and find the locations of other stores but didn't take the highway, then i was 2 minutes too late for the last combo at another store. i crossed the bridge visited another store, again sold out. got 1 at the next store - i almost wanted to quit.

but this cheap combo is pretty bad. the floor jack can only raise 33 cm at max, which is hardly enough for the lowest position on the jack stands.

anyway, the car is raised up a little bit, just enough for me to get under it. then these 2 screws are damn hard to remove. i sprayed some wd-40 and waited, but no effect. i used hammer on the socket, no use. i put some rugs on the handle of socket and pulled really hard under the car, the screws almost got rounded.

ugh i had to quit. and then this floor jack is so bad, i need to use a flat head screw driver to turn the release valve - the manual says "very slowly" - anyway it's damn dangerous to operate.

damn it i'll probably have to find a shop to get rid of the screws.

btw, with a rough measure, the tip would extend almost 5 cm out of the rear bumper. havn't decided whether to cut it off a bit.

Hey Cloudland,

I am sorry to hear that you have had so much frustration trying to install your new exhaust! I hope you get it figured out soon.

I have been following this thread, more to see if you were pleased with the products and service from nelsonmazdaparts. I am probably going to pick up one of those exhausts too, so I've been keenly keeping and eye on your posts!

I do have a question though, do you need a gasket or anything where the muffler bolts to the mid-pipe, or is it simply pull the old one off, and screw the new one on?

Good luck getting it installed!!

Cheers.
