mazda sport speed exhaust muffler on ebay - any idea?

I do have a question though, do you need a gasket or anything where the muffler bolts to the mid-pipe, or is it simply pull the old one off, and screw the new one on?
thanks mate

a gasket and two nuts are included in the package, so the old ones can be discarded; and two bolts are welded on the muffler. so yes it's simply pull the old one off, and the new one on.

a simple instruction page is included, it should be straight forward job if U have the right tools, and a bit of luck with the old nuts n bolts.

nelsonmazdaparts seems to be pretty good. the guy even exchanged several emails concerning the length and bumper differences after the payment was made. quite helpful actually.

Thanks for that help! I'm on my way to eBay as we speak! Hopefully I'll have a new muffler soon!

Cheers.

PS Seen any orcs or oliphants recently? Sorry couldn't help myself - I was just watching the Return of the King added features with Peter Jackson. Man, New Zealand is beautiful I really hope to get down there one day (cool) .

orc? i'm one myself when eating. (laugh)

oh yes NZ is beautiful, great for road trips.

but we had a pretty gloomy summer in the last few weeks. the capital city was totally isolated (all roads blocked) for a while this morning due to heavy rain and flooding. don't come here now. ;)

cloudland: try soaking the nut/bolt with wd40 4-5 times waiting 10mins in between to let it penetrate. have you tried using 6 point socket on a wrench with a long handle to get more leverage?
be careful to not round the nuts, otherwise you'll have to cut it off. i had a similar problem loosening a nut under the car when installing headers. i eventually got it loose using a pretty short box wrench(15cm?), but using my legs to push against a wall or something solid to get the power, while holding the wrench in my hands as still as possible to make sure it doesn't slip off the nut. good luck with it!

cheers coldie, i tried wd40, i also tried use both arms with one leg kicking the tires to get a bit more leverage. man i was like a desperate shrimp. (bang) the bad floor jack didn't give me much space to work.

i stopped because the nuts are just about to round. maybe it's because NZ is too damp?

i'll probably give it another try tomorrow if it's not raining. otherwise it'd be first thing Monday morning. sorry keep U waiting. (hand) anyway i'm pretty sure it'll stick out of my rear bumper for about 4~5 cm.

hehe i was just joking... just try it again when you have time. and put more wd40 on it.
i know exactly how you feel tho... i've yet to install my eibachs after a couple of weeks coz i've stripped the sh*t out of a nut on my strut and still trying to figure out how to get it off safely without damaging the bolt. tried again today but it started raining just before i was gonna try cutting it off, so i called it quits and am gonna leave it for another day. my back is sore... :(

I used PB Blaster and soaked the bolts/nuts for two days. Basically just sprayed huge layers all over and around the bolt/nut area periodically. Then I slowly worked with pressure to free them.

yeah i've heard great things about pb blaster, but i haven't been able to find it anywhere in australia yet. do you know of any online stores that sell it and ship overseas?

cheers altspace, not sure if i can find this here.

and coldie, tried again today, used the stock scissors jack and jack stands in the cheap combo i bought, got more space to work with, with a longer handle on the socket. no luck at all. i'm afraid that the nut is one step closer to a perfect round shape.

will visit a local muffler shop tomorrow morning, hopefully it'd be a quick job for them.

bugger! hope the muffler shop won't charge you too much for it. you gonna get them to cut the tip while you're there?
btw how old is your car? mines just over 3 yrs so i reckon my exhaust nuts are gonna be as stubborn as yours.

i'm a real stingy. i won't pay more then NZ$10 for the removal of 2 nuts. but who knows?

i'll probably won't cut it Monday morning, i'll see how it fits, at least take some pictures first. 5 cm might not be a biggy. i'll see.

mine is first registered in mid July 2001, that'd be 3.5 years, though just 25Ks on the clock now.

i'm waiting for my whiteline rear sway bar, now i'm really worried about the nuts involved. i'll probably try some crc next time. havn't spotted the pb blaster here.

long story short:
1, the shop took off the nuts in like 2 seconds with air tool
2, the shop put the muffler on and it looks ugly (extruding out)
3, the shop cut the tip and reweld it - damn i didn't notice they put the tip almost upside down.
4, total cost NZ$50
5, feeling? it's mixed.

here's some pictures:

here comes the sound file

0 ~ 16 second stock muffler, first rev to 4k rpm, then twice about 6k

17 second afterwards mazdaspeed, same pattern as above.

the sound, i'd say it's a mixed feeling. the drone appears to happen at around high 3k to 4k rpm, after that it doesn't sounds much louder than stock.

i'll be heading airport in 10 minutes, will try it out on the highway.

question I have is the drain hole at the end of the tip in the right place?
so that's the drain hole, ugh?

i'm afraid i'll have to drill one myself. that drain hole is facing up.

:(

ok, had a few run. so far i was a bit annoyed about the droning sound at 2000 rpm.

which means, cruise in town at around 50~60 KM/H (approx. 1500 ~ 1800 rpm), or cruise on highway at around 95~110 KM/H (approx 2500 ~ 3000 rpm), the muffler is about as quiet as the stock. there isn't too much difference.

but at around the 2000 rpm range, say 1900 ~ 2200 rpm, the droning sound is a bit annoying, and makes me feel that the car is actually slower - it's like the car is "trying" very hard but it's not pulling away that fast.
it sounds faster, but it feels slower.

the 2000 rpm mark is unavoidable during acceleration from stop. it makes city trip more "attracting".

heavy traffic on highway today, only tried a few times at the 3500~4000 rpm mark. i'd say the droning is less of concern then that at 2000 rpm.

i'll probably check this out
