Mazda Speed5 Project!

Awesome awesome awesome!

Love seeing that Mazda5 with the added zoom!

Be safe have fun, and keep us updated! Good Luck!!!(first)

That Miata was scrambling for dear life! I'm sure he wondered: How the heck is a minivan keeping up with me?

You guys have got Motortends attention for sure!

The hilarious Mazda5 we mentioned yesterday looks to be a thorn in the sides of not just those in the SUV class, including an X6 M, but it also managed to best a Cayman S, Camaro SS, and WRX STI during the first session. It's not that surprising when you consider the Mazdaspeed3 running gear and stripped and caged interior, but it sure is fun watching a minivan get crossed up in chase of real sports cars.

2010 Mazdaspeed5
One Lap has some history with fast minivans. A few years ago, a group of Honda employees were regular attendees with a built, turbocharged Odyssey. Honda canceled the program last year, but a Mazda dealer is continuing the trend.

The Mazdaspeed5 is a creation of Autobahn Mazda of Countryside. The technicians there removed the drivetrain from a wrecked 2008 Mazdaspeed3 and implanted it into a new Mazda5 with the requisite go-fast modifications. Team members Richard Fisher and Jason Saini tell us it's a surprisingly easy bolt-in process. Out the van went everything past the front seats; it's stripped and caged and very fast.

The Mazda5 competes in an SUV and truck class against a F-150 Lightning, a Ram SRT-10, and a stock X6 M driven by BMW driving instructor Mike Renner. Understandably, the Mazda is the fastest of that group, but today at Mid-America it was eighth fastest in the first round, 13th in the second. That's on par with one Corvette Z06 and an Ultima GTR.

lol, Autobahn you rock.

Good job. Well worth it for that alone.

Dear Mazda,

You should build a factory Mazda speed5. Guys with families who like to go fast will thank you.

Sincerely,

Donas64.

We yesterday rocked and today not so much.... Yesterday we finished 8th and 13th at Mid America putting us to 9th overall 1st in class ...today we finished 28th and 25th at Hallett ...still first in class (first) but dropped to 13th overall ( out of 68 ) ... at Tulsa drag tonight but have not seen any scoring yet ( not betting on a great finish here car is built to handle curves and road course not go go real fast in a straight line ) ...On a bright note feel good about making up time for the rest of the races, Gateway and New Jersey should be ok and Mid Ohio and Nelson Ledges are both very very familiar to Jason Saini ( who will drive both of those courses ) .... and the dry skid on the last day ( we finished 4th over all in wet skid ) .... Keep your fingers crossed!!!

This is a great thread, thanks for all your posts / update!

And I finally realized where you are located, I have a cousin who is about a half mile north of your dealership in La Grange, she is on South Kensington Avenue. I remember driving by your dealership when going to her house but it was a Sunday so you were closed (for you non-Illinoisans, in Illinois all car dealerships are closed on Sundays). I was there to catch the Chicago Auto Show. Next time I'm up there I'll be sure to drop by and hopefully see your Mazdaspeed5.

Out of curiosity, one of the drivers sleeps in the back while traveling between races, right? Is there a board he sleeps on or how does that work? I mean, the floor is a little uneven.

Also, what weight were you able to get it down to?

Thanks again for validating the love I have for my 5. Your pioneering attitude toward exploiting the Zoom-Zoom to the 5's maximum potential makes me proud to be part of the Mazda family.

While I will likely never take the opportunity to clip any race-track apexes, it's nice to know that I'm only a speed3 transplant away from Z06 huntin'. :)

Mazdaspeed5: It's coming for JOOOOOO!!!!!

Judging by the comments generated by our first 2010 One Lap post, Richard Fisher and Jason Saini's Mazda5 is something of a fan favorite. The two-box minivan is more than just a curiosity, however, what with its shoehorned-in Mazdaspeed3 drivetrain, full rollcage and stripped interior. Evidently late for soccer practice, the Mazda Mommymobile pedaled its way to a fantastic eighth place finish in round one and a thoroughly credible 13th place finish in round two at Mid America.

When this is all said and done we need to organize a meet and advertise it in the general msprotege forum. It could be the center point of a really big event. Anyone else agree?
