hey i have a 2003 mazda protege 5 and i was wondering, i see the adapter on the shifter i wanted to make it shorter but it doesnt seem to be budging..... any suggestions? the solver piece has 2 holes on oposte sides of the shifter i tried sticking a screwdriver through it and pulling and turning it but its not going newhere, is that just an adapter?? anyone? please let me know thanks!

what i did is put a torch on the part with the holes and got it nice and hot it slid right apart. its rubber inside.... it works great and looks great shorter.:)

If you just want to make your shifter shorter that's great, but the purpose of a true short shifter is to make the "throw" between the gears less. The bottom end of a short shifter is actually longer from bushing to bushing. If you're gonna get a B and M please be prepared to do some serious work. I put mine in last weekend and I expected a 1/2hour job. It turned into 4 real fast! The end result is sweet though... Super stiff and clean movement, and the travel between gears is amazingly short and fast...

the top piece is connected with bonded rubber. It takes a lot of strength or a torch to get it off, and there aren't any threads under it.. (been there done that)

I strongly suggest an aftermarket shifter. I have a B&M and it's been awesome over the 160,000 miles I've had it.
