Mazda Protege 5 2003 Not Running Properly

Hi Guys

I have a mazda protege 2003 2.0l with 143,000kms

I changed the plugs but it isn't running properly at all. Its very sluggish when pulling away and going uphill it has no power at all and the engine doesn't pull very well.

Ive read alot about cleaning the egr valve on this forum and i suspect that it has never been cleaned on this car, also i haven't changed the plug leads yet

Any help here would be greatly appreciated

I had a similar issue of lack of power, however I found out there was wayyy too much oil in the engine.

EGR valve was another issue caused problems on cold starts and idle would bounce around everywhere.
check the contacts on the ends of the wires. I did have some corrision on there from when my rad blew coolant all over the block.

I haven't checked the connections but the oil level in the car is fine.

I suspect that if i change the plug leads and clean the egr valve it could help a lot

Thanks for all the comments :)

Soak the EGR in brake cleaner, thats what I did and then dremeled it out.

LOL Dont use styrofoam plates and brake cleaner LOL!

LOL at above.....when you replaced plugs, did you replace coils too?? Ever run anytype of cleaner through motor? might want to look at fuel injector service

hi guys

i replaced plugs but not the coils as they looked ok, can anyone recommend a good coil?? i plan to clean the egr valve this weekend so thanks for thr tips on cleaning that.

I heard that the fuel filter in a protege 5 is located in the fuel tank? is this true??

Fuel filter is a 'sock'no that fits over the pump inlet....you can get to it under the rear seat....just goto autozone and pick up 2 new coils

corroding cables ... sounds very interesting, would that cause stalling & jerking after some stop n go traffic?
oh and where are those cables so I can get someone to check them (not that technologically inclined)
mine has been having some issues for a month now and noone seems to be able to figure it out
