Mazda position on use of Synthetic Oil in CX-9

Is anyone aware of Mazda position on using synthetic oil ? Do they suggest using regular oil for break-in, before switching to synthetic ? I live in Ontario Canada.

Ooops, sorry. I just noticed that Mazda Canada has a web page advertising their own brand of 0W-20 synthetic. I guess they support using it.

Of course. Why not? They make more money from you.
However, they do not allow you to lengthen the change interval. That is the "catch".

Synthetic oil has same intervals as Dino oil unless you specifically buy long life synthetic oil. What synthetic oil does is provide better protection especially if you run your car hard. I ran only synthetic oil in my 5, did the oil changes myself to save money.

And anyway, 0W20 is only available in synthetic.

Yes I know that you have to maintain their recommended change interval. I really do believe in the superior winter start capability though. The engine turns over so much easier at -20 C, and does a better job at preventing engine wear during a cold start..

I have used Royal Purple of the correct weight, and either a K&N or a Royal Purple filter ever since the 5000 mile mark on my '10 CX9. The engine always ran smoothly, but with the synthetic, I don't get any "cold engine clatter." I change my own oil, and I habitually run it to the 7500 mile mark (per my owners manual) because I am not in a dusty environment, and my driving is about 75% freeway speeds. In Texas that means anywhere from 60 - 85. (We have a brand new 85MPH tollway from east of San Antonio to Austin.) Were I caught in stop and go traffic in my normal course of driving, I would consider that severe service, and drop the oil at 3000 mile intervals - and in that case would not use a synthetic.

oh boy the synthetic oil debate. First read your owners manual, if Mazda recommended synthetic it would say it in there. My 2012 does not but my local dealership said it is. It was recommended on the CX-7.

Now for my experience, it may result in better protection and I do typically run it (depending on motor) but conventional oils used with regular changings are more than adequate. Of all the motors I've pulled I've never seen a difference between the two. I did a budget rebuild on a V8 that used conventional oil its entire life when I pulled that apart after 40,000k miles I had no visual damage. This was a home honed block with reused stock pistons...not an ideal way to build one. Cylinder walls, piston walls and bearings all looked like when I put together.

I used it for my first oil change but after giving it more thought and the newness wore off I stopped just not worth the expense for this motor. Let me ask you this, in your lifetime how many motors have you seen fail due to bad oil?

Speaking of synthetic. 2012 GT just turned 7500 miles. Brought in to the dealer for oil change. $30 for regular oil, EIGHTY for synthetic!?!!! WTF. I took regular oil. Interesting thing. The sticker on my windshield said I was due in 5000K, mean next change at 12500K. Why wouldn't it be 15000k instead?

I highly recommend against using Royal Purple for daily drivers. It's a great racing oil but it's not a daily driver protection oil.

If I were to Autocross my 3, I would drain the stock oil, fill with Royal Purple, race, then drain the Royal Purple and put the stock oil back in.

pugsx, oil changes are supposed to be 5,000 miles. Were you really late for your first oil change?

Pugsx, check your owners manual. There are 2 suggested maintenance schedules based on your climate and driving conditions/habits.

Your dealer is opting for the more conservative one (shorter intervals) probably because they make more $$ and see you more.

You can debate them on this but if they are the ones backing your warranty, just follow their advice.

Or do it more often yourself and save bucks, maybe. But at $30 it's a no brainer. $60 is about normal for synthetic, here.

My dealer uses synthetic blend and charges about $26 for it including the filter. I believe the manual says you can change at 7500 mile intervals but that is for normal driving. My wife drives our 9 and only puts 10k a year on it at the most and does a lot of short trips so we change it twice a year due to "severe" conditions we operate our car under.

I've used synthetic oil on all my cars. At the first oil change I swap the drain plug for a Fumoto valve, and oil for Mobile 1. I change it twice a year after that, Spring and Fall here in the colder climate makes it easy to remember.
