Mazda Oil Filter questions

2025 Mazda CX5 NA
Hi everyone,

I've learned a lot on this forum, and others, but this one is especially good. So thank you all for your posts!

One of the things i learned is how important an oil filter is. Until I got my 2025 Mazda CX5, I never really gave much thought about a filter. Always heard the name ones and just got those. But its interesting after digging deeper, that the filters I used to use weren't as good as I thought.

A lot of people seem to like these genuine Mazda oil filters. Pictured here is the one made in Japan. I also have the one made in Thailand, which i will likely use eventually, but after reading a lot, and even holding them, the japan one seems to be a. bit better quality. But the one from Thailand is definitely good too.

Anyway, I also like how they seal the hole with plastic to prevent contaminants from entering. I know, its a little thing, but is a lot of the little things why i love my Mazda!

I'm curious as to what oil filter you use on your Mazda CX 5 and why. Have you used this particular filter, why or why not?

Thanks

I have used mostly non Mazda filters. The Mazda filters that I have used are made in Thailand. I like oil filters with large inlet holes, large filter media, and holes instead of louvers on the inner tube.

I can only buy the Thailand oem from local dealers and that is what I used for 20+ oil changes so far. No complaints.

i run a mobil 1 filter...i order 4 at a time...car just turned 25k miles today...debating on installing a catch can to help...seems to have helped on our other vehicle

On these Mazdas, I'd skip it. I've only read stories about bad smells and rear main seal leaks. And the only thing that the catch can seems to collect is dirty water.

Yes. there are plenty of dealers that sell online at discount. Buying more reduces the effect of added shipping.

I've standardized on Purolator filters. Lately, I've been using their Boss line of filters. That's what's in my car right now.

I deviate from that with my BMW 135i which I use Mann filters. For my motorcycles, I use the factory BMW filters for the two I own. On my Kawasaki, I use a Purolator Boss that's a larger size than what the stock filter is.

This is a 1WPE-14-302 from my most recent 5K OCI. Removed on Monday. The can was the most difficult of the 4 that I have cut open so far. Scuffs on the can were left by vise grip and plumbing wrench.

The shorty element with metal end caps is a Royal Purple from 2 cycles ago. Shorty is very sturdy. From what I have gathered, the filter media on Wix 57002 and Hengst filters are also short like RP.
