Mazda Forums needs a new server!!!

Antoine

Administrator
Good news: The Mazda Forums community is more active than ever!

Bad news: Our current server is maxed out...It's time to upgrade!

Please note: We might be experiencing some technical issues with the site and vBulletin at this time. We would appreciate your patience in this matter. Rest assured Mazda Forums will get that much needed "ZOOM ZOOM" soon!

I would like to ask if anyone has a good host recommendation that can accommodate a site of this nature...Please post it! Our current setup is:

Intel Dual Xeon 2.4 with 2GB ram, 2x73 and RHEL. Plus backup services.

http://www.ev1servers.net/hosting/xeon_series.asp ($320/month)

*We're going to need at least 4GB of RAM this time around!

Thanks!

Yep, time to turn up the boost. I've been experiencing some serious "turbo lag" with the site lately. Even now, when I went to reply to this, it took about a minute for the page to load.

Do you know for sure if it's being limited by CPU or RAM?
I assume your admin guy has gone over the figures.

Can't you just stick another 2G in the current server? Be a whole lot less hassle than moving to a new one!

If it's CPU bound, then I'd suggest Opterons over Intel for Database intensive stuff like a busy forum.

For those sort of specs, you'd be best speaking to a sales rep to determine your needs more precisely.
ThePlanet, GNAX, softlayer could all provide systems to meet your needs.

We could definitely use more ram but we might need a complete server upgrade! Enry (our tech admin) has stated that our server is "starting to throw all kinds of nice scsi errors" and that we should upgrade to something "beefier"...I can't agree more!

Here is a quick list I dug up off the net...I'll check the ones you mentioned as well!

Out of those you listed, liquidweb is probably the most well known, and supposedly top notch, but you pay for it, as the prices show.

Oh - and don't ever pay yearly for hosting!

Yeah...$789 more than a bit pricey...Of those listed...We're currently looking into hostway.com and joltdigital.com...Still shopping around though so post any recommendations ;)

Well while I agree that we need a bigger server, it might not be a bad idea to close the rep thread in the mean time just to speed things up a bit. And I'm not tying to be a jerk to anyone who posts there, but it's a massive waste of serve space when we already have "The longest thread", and it made the rep system completely useless.

As much as I've definitely noticed some slowdown recently, I don't know if shutting down one thread is really going to fix anything. Why not lock "the longest thread" if you are going to do it since it's definitely more active. It'll just lead people to starting new temporary threads. I say just bear with it for now. I do a lot of forum surfing during off-peak times (at least I think they are off peak) so when I am on the forum at peak times I can definitely feel the difference.

Hey can we get graphs of pageviews or db polls plotted vs. time of day? I for one wouldn't mind specifically tailoring my forum time to be only during the off-peak hours.

As for a host I've never run a site quite this large so I can't really recommend a host. I run all my sites via doteasy but it's on shared servers so that would definitely be out of the question. I have no idea if they offer a "bigger" hosting package on dedicated servers.

Bad news: The Mazda Forums may not always function correctly and quickly!

Good news: My production in school should increase exponentially since i wont be on here 24/7!

For anyone who wants to suggest providers, that's cool, but keep in mind, minimum specs are dual xeon 3ghz, 4gb ram, 200GB raid, and 2000gb transfer. PM me if you know a good host.

edit: and under 500$

Yeah...I'd like to see the following for under $500 a month...idealy around $400!

* minimum dual xeon 3ghz or equivalent dual AMD Opterons
* 4gb ram
* 200+gb usable space in RAID config...75gb x 3 (SCSI!!!)
* 2000GB/mo transfer
* Remote access control for remote console

1-Month @ $229.00 + Setup: $99.00
-----------------
Intel Dual Xeon 3.2
4096MB RAM ($75)
75GB SCSI HD ($30)
146GB SCSI HD ($60)
IDE/SCSI - RAID 1 Controller ($25)
No Control Panel (If needed, I recommend DirectAdmin - $15)
CentOS 3.x (Love it, same as RHEL but free)
8 IPs - 5 usable
Tier 1 Bandwidth - 2000GB ($50 - Upgraded from 1200GB)
100Mbps Uplink ($10 - Upgraded from 10Mbps)
-----------------------
Total + Upgrades: $479/month

LayeredTech

I've been using LT for 2 years and love them. Great support and have never had a problem (well, one small one when they set it up, but was fixed and gave me a second 80GB HD no charge). That's my recommendation, take it as you wish, just thought I'd try and help out a bit.

I would also recommend CentOS over RHEL, it's the same thing, but CentOS is free and will be supported for many years to come. Any questions about LT I'd be happy to answer! BTW, I'm not a reseller of LT, I don't get commission, I'm not associated with them. Just a happy customer.

My friend owns Netboundaries.com which is a dedicated gaming server business. I asked him what he had to offer and these are the specifications and costs:

Processors: Dual Intel Xeons@2.80 with HyperThreading
RAM: 4GB ECC Registered DDR
Hard Drive 1: 75GB SCSI (Raid 5)
Hard Drive 2: 75GB SCSI (Raid 5)
Hard Drive 3: 75GB SCSI (Raid 5)
Operating System: Probably Fedora
Monthly Transfer: 4000GB / 4TB

The machine also has Dual Gigabit Ethernet Controllers. He said he would do $400/month with a setup fee of $175 which will cover shipping the box back to him so he can add more hard drives, reinstalling the OS and then shipping at back to the data center which is brand new and located in Chicago (I've been there with him).

Hmmm...Looks very promising...I'll post this offer in the admin forum where we are also discussing hosting options...Thanks!

Not only that, but a striping raid? (boom2) That's just asking for trouble.
