Mazda 5 transmission

Hello Mazda community...
Does anyone know about/follow Mazda's design types for transmissions? I understand the Mazda 5 has a drivetrain similar to the 3. Friends have told me that Mazda's weakness is in the transmissions, specifically a friend had a lemon 626. Does the 5's transmission have any similarities to the 626? Do the 3s and 5s use a particular family of transmissions? I can find all kinds of information on the engine, the MZR, but I can't seem to find any specific info on the transmission.

Any comments or references appreciated. I'm really close to putting down some hard cash on a 5 but I wanted to make sure I'm not getting questionable vehicle.

Thanks!

I'm aware that 626 transmissions have been a weak point, but I don't know the exact for the 3 and 5. I can tell you that I lurk in the Protege boards every now and then. The impression I get is that the automatics aren't the strongest, but keep in mind that many Protege drivers are, ah, young, and there's some acknowledgement that much of this may be to being driven hard. Or abused. In other words, if you don't abuse the car, the tranny should be okay.

The word on the street also seems to be that the manual trannys are stronger, if that's an option.

I have both manual tranny's in my 2000 626 and 2006 Mazda 5. Not an issue with both with over combined km of only 120000km. So for what its worth I also recommend manual for its supierior fun experience....

i had a 91 protoge 5 speed and put 186k miles on it with the original clutch. My 02 protege now has 45k miles with no problems.

93 and up 626 AUTO Trannys were a problem, although that was because they were FORD product, and Ford had loads of problems with that tranny.

Mazda 5 and Mazda 3 share the same engine, however the 2007 Mazda 3 has a different AUTO transmission.

FWIW---I have banged LOTS of gears in all of my mazdas and never had a Tranny problem. LOTS OF HARD DRIVING(drive)
