Mazda plans to take on the VW Golf GTi with a 220bhp, 150mph MPS version of the Mazda 3 hatchback

Due in 2006, the front-drive Mazda 3 MPS will share its looks with the MX Sportif concept of 2003 (pictured above), and use a detuned version of the 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the 6 MPS. Expect a similar 0-60mph time of around 6.5sec. The 3s lighter weight and lower power means it can cope without the four-wheel-drive system of its bigger brother.

The engine shares its turbocharged, directly injected format with the 197bhp 2.0-litre Golf, but the 3 MPS will use its extra capacity to challenge the 222bhp Renault Mgane Renaultsport, currently the most powerful four-cylinder car in the class.

hi guys im from the uk looking at getting a mazda 3 hatch 1.6 diesel anyof you have one ? in sport trim (cool)

They should have made the mazda 3 sedan an MPS, i don't like the hatch.

its not called 'the hot sedan market' 'its the hot hatch market'

but maybe thats just b/c hatchs are big here

Well a turbo sedan could compete very well with the Jetta GLI. Personally i think they should have both just like VW.

I was about to say the same thing. The US market is going to be different. I guarantee that the MS 6 will look different than the euro spec. The MPS 6s rims are ugly and doubt that they will make it to the US. Anyway it is good to see this car. I am waiting for this car to be my next so I now have something fairly concrete to look forward to.(cool)

To add on, I think the hatch looks dope, don't like the regular 3 hatch but this one is nice.

I agree that the Sportif concept looks way better than the regular 3 5-door. But look at the two side by side and it's hard to figure out the differences. The four differences I can note: no atenna, different grill, lower ride height and larger lower grill. None of those seem like they'd make as much of a difference as they do...weird.

This is news to me. In fact, I wanted to ask typerboy if this came from an auto magazine or officially from Mazda? Somehow I doubt this came from an official Mazda outlet (but I could be wrong).

The information came from Autocar, a British car magazine. Here is a link to the original article:

Ok, here's the news article where the info comes from:

http://www.autocarmagazine.com/news_article.asp?na_id=212367

It's a UK car magazine. Ironically enough, Autocar is one of the magazines I read whenever I have free time at one of the mega-bookstores in Toronto. Their reviews are quite interesting. However, for this particular Mazdaspeed3 article, they did an awesome job of quoting out of context and speculating/implying things (I know the context and time Bakaj gave that quote and it has nothing to do with any potential Mazdaspeed3).

Bottom-line, don't take any of this news article to heart. As of this moment, there is nothing official from Mazda about any potential Mazdaspeed3.

Edit: Oops, I was typing this post as the post above got sent, so my link is a duplicate, but the commentary still applies

Yeah sounded a bit premature to me...But I do think she'll be around 210-220 hp...we'll see ;)

Yes, I agree. I just personally think the sedan looks much nicer. I think Mazda should have both sedan and hatch speed versions.

Doesn't matter if it will be a hatch or sedan to me. My regular Mazda3 sedan will still be faster! (hump)
