Mazda 3, enough room for family?

I have a p5 now but looking for more room for a family. I have a few choices for cars, but my number one would be the 3. So, my questions are... Is there enough space for car seats, comfortably? Is the cargo room big enough?

Sedan or Hatch?

If it is a hatch, the room is comparable to a P5

sedan has pretty good room depending how big you are. me and all my friends are about normal size (5'5"-6'1" and 150-215lbs) and we can fit 5 pretty comfortable. back seat is just very uncomfortable on long trips ha ha

The cargo room is slightly less deep then the Protege5. But the interior space is larger for people. I have noticed I can fit a rear facing car seat in the middle unlike the protege5. The space is large enough to fit someone back there while the car seat is in place. If you feel the Mazda3 is not large enough, you could go with a Mazda5. Just understand the mpg and speed is less because of size and weight. I would also not use the third row because of rear impact safety.

I'm able to fit a rear facing car seat easily and I feel the back trunk area has a good amount of room. We have had no problems with going on big grocery shopping trips or throwing the raft back there when we float the river.
