Posted in the wheels bit but didnt realise this was like a general discussion area so yeah,

what set up is everyone running as Ideally id like coilovers but ive seen that some people run mazda 3 coilovers, which are 300ish compared to the 5s at 800

Also could you give me an idea of what the ride quality and comfort is like?

I want the lows but not the rough ride that generally goes with it

Cheers in advance

(while im here, anybody else had their 5 idle about 800rpm?)

Firmer ride is typically necessary when you lower a car to keep it from bottoming with the reduced suspension travel and clearances.

If you are only willing to pay 300 to get "the lows", you're looking at low end coilovers that will get you low but not much else. Low quality at that price point, blunt answer but true, sorry.

Idk if there are different brands available over there, but here in the US unfortunately there's not a ton of options outside of entry level coilovers at about the ~$1000 price point, and one is pretty much the same as the next. BC Racing is sometimes considered one of the better budget brands, but a couple people on this board have had issues with the BCR hardware and spring perches being unable to maintain torque, so I wouldn't recommend them either personally at this point (though the ride was respectable in the car I experienced with BCR c/o) . Sorry, I know that doesn't leave a lot of options. :(

Edit: I just saw your other post from just 7 hours ago - just an FYI, this forum isn't THAT active so it sometimes takes a couple days to gather some responses. We weren't ignoring you. :)

You forgot YellowSpeed DSPs :)! Based on what I've seen/read here on the Mz5 spec'd BC Racings BR Type, I can say the YS DSP “look” like the better option - granted I haven't installed them yet :p. YS was trying to enter the US market but I get the feeling they weren't very successful -you can't find much info about them on the web aside from a LOT of speculation and assumptions. I really want to put them on a shock dyno but there are no local shops and I have no idea how much that would cost me. I recall one other member also had YS but the Premium Comps (only spec’d for Mz3) but later went air and sold the old set to another member here.

I think your other post in the suspension sub-forum is more appropriate but since everyone responded here, I’ll add my $.02. There are quite a few differences between the YS and BCR. Read up on them but you got to pay attention to details! The big question mark (and a lot of web assumptions) is that these two use the same replacing cartridges b/c they both come out of Taiwan (there’s some failed logic in that). I use to think so as well but I’m not so sure anymore.

Unfortunately most budget coilovers are targeted to the slam-it-now crow so they come with very short springs, which leave you with very little suspension travel. Consider the added weight of the Mz5’s rear end and multiply that force when you hit a bump. This is why Mz3 REAR setup is a bad idea waiting to happen. Short travel can be made to feel nice but you need some premium shocks to control that kind of force.

I am still debating on what my next steps should be with the YS. The Mz5 is no longer my DD so I'm not motivated to mod her but I kinda what to do them –just because. We’ll see. I'm eveulating the YS in the thread below. I'll get to the front one of these weekends.

So how many people are running 3 coilovers?

Id rather spend 800 on a good branded set of 3 coilovers than 800 on budget 5 ones just because there all thats available to me

Only option I can seem to find in coilovers and below is the only option for struts and springs

Compared to mazda 3 stuff:

Much wider range and better makes (or more known to me anyway)

About $35-45 per shock. sac02 and I use the same suspension guys up here in Dallas...

I passed on the YellowSpeeds because of lack of info, plus I wasn't able to cut a sweet deal with them on writing an article. ;)
