Massachusetts introduces bill to ban modified exhausts

Yes, that is interesting. I've never seen a PD, DMV, DOT or State using sound equipment, ever in my life in any state. In practice it's a subjective call. When I was pulled over it was a document check on a holiday weekend, basically a DUI roadblock. It was a DMV guy who called my pipes into question. Said "No Mufflers" I argued they were, he called them "Pinched Pipes" They do look like they're just pinched, but they're chambered. They fit the description of a muffler as in the link posted by therieldeal.
http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/faq.html The crimps around the louvered flowpath make up the tune and do the sound suppression (ok, not much).

chuyler1 - Cars are better, and you drive one of them. I get 28mpg Hwy at 80 mph in the MSP6. 400HP Vettes get 25 Hwy. My 74 Vette, when it only had 195Hp got 10mpg at 55mph going down a hill, and my 66 Coronet 383 got about 7. So, what's to snap out of?

In general sports cars have rode the tide, increasing HP while getting roughly the same mileage or better. I'd rather see people cruisin around in corvettes than full sized SUVs but we know that ain't gonna happen.

Statically, however, the average vehicle gets worse gas mileage than they did 20 years ago and this is primarily due to people driving vehicles that are much larger than their daily tasks require (ahem SUVs and large pickups). I understand that people can only afford one vehicle and they don't want to be in a situation where they need something bigger...but check the prices on full size SUVs. It is much more economical to drive a mid sized sedan (or god forbid compact car) every day and (gasp) rent an SUV when you need one. But this is America and people have the right to destroy the environment.

Every time you see someone driving a Hummer, remember that they are getting less than 10 mpg.

Yeah, the SUV is a status thing, I don't care what anybody says. There's no friggin wat a 32 year old woman who lives in the suburbs, weighs 105lbs, has 2 kids and a dog needs a Suburban, but it tells everyone she's "arrived". That's why caddy got in on the craze. Everyone can get a Suburban. We gotta trade up! Escalade = escalate. I admit I'm just as bad, gotta drive the go-fast stuff. A lot more fun IMO.

I think you're right now that you put it into perspective, cause so many people own them now. Ask a European, they think we all drive bigass SUV's.
