Manual & automatic brake pedals interchangable?

I have an 07 3 Hatchback with an auto trans, I think the brake pedal is to big and to close to the gas pedal. I've seen pics of the manual brake pedal and it's about 1/2 the size of the one they put in the automatic cars. Can a manual pedal be put into an automatic car? How are the brake pedals attached?

My size 11.5's have trouble clearing the brake pedal to get to the gas pedal at times. The smaller brake pedal would give my foot more clearance.

Been a while since I looked, but I'm fairly certain all the pedals are one piece--you'd have to remove the entire pedal, not just a cover plate.
Also, I think they're made of high-impact plastics. If it's that much of an issue, you can always attack the break pedal with a cut-off disc...
