magnumP5's RX-7 Build Thread

You sneaky bastard! I thought Beth was preggers but not DARE ask. haha. Congrats, man! And I hear ya about the other build, especially when all your friends have toys to play with and you don't. You'll have it done soon. Just keep up the great work, research and updates. (2thumbs)

Congrats Jon! Jen and I thought that might be a baby bump going on there. LOL.

On a lighter note, and I guess now is as good a time as any to bring it up, but some of you at Mid-Ohio might have noticed another "build" going on that has Beth, my wife, much happier ;) We're about 22 weeks into the "build" and the scheduled "completion" date is October 17. Beth likes to make fun of me saying her "build" will be done before mine but I'm quick to point out her's require(s/d) significantly less work on my part, LOL!

Congrats!!

Congrats!
Thanks guys! It still hasn't quite set in yet; even after the ultrasound! We're going to be doing some shopping this weekend (yay) for the first time so maybe it'll hit me then.

Back to the RX-7 for a bit. I think I'm pretty much done with the passenger's side of the engine harness. It's not perfect or pretty but it should do the job for now. I figure I'll probably have to change it in the future so there's no sense in worrying about it now. I plan on tackling the alternator wiring and starting the ignitor stuff tonight. Sparking of alternator wiring does anyone here have any experience with electromagnetic interference (EMI)? My crank angle sensor wires, the ones most important to running the engine, are passing right by the alternator. The CAS wires are already shielded/grounded but I'm wondering if I should look into EMI shielding or something.

I also added another "not-originally-planned-mod" to the list: overhauling the vacuum system. I bought a vacuum block from McMaster, a bunch of fittings and a ton of silicone hose. The vacuum source will be two 6 mm lines from the intake runners. I'll be redoing the brake booster and the RX-7-equivalent-of-a-PCV lines as well as adding new lines for the FPR and ECU (internal MAP sensor). This will allow me to get rid of a few more of the stock hardlines that run along the firewall.

Daddy Jon and Mommy Beth! Congrats guys, another mini meeps is on the way.....my prediction!?!? GIRL!!!!!!

Ha, you and everyone else! As much as I would've loved a girl the ultrasound showed otherwise. He will be introduced to the world of racing, Mazdas, and wrenching at an early age. After all, if all goes well he'll be inheriting the 2 in 16 years!

Gratz, guy! I thought I saw the bump as well, but knew better than mentioning it! :D

As far as the muffler situation, what about running something like the twin loop? That's the first thing that came to mind when you mentioned size constraints. I think Mugen originally made them, but now OBX does, and Hytech makes a more baller version from what I've read for more $$$.

There are mainly only Honda vids on youtube, but I think this one sounds a tad bit better. I couldn't find any on 13b's...

Holy hell, the world must be coming to an end. Uncle Marlon was wrong on baby gender? Jon, to be honest I have 3 girls and now a mini me. As far as I am concerned, they are both the greatest thing evar.

Yeah, that's kind of what I was getting at but with two mufflers; however, that might work too. It would definitely have to be a much larger setup though as I don't think that little thing would do anything on a rotary. I wonder if anyone makes any dual 2.5" in/out mufflers.

Why, don't they allow babies in Colorado? lol
This literally made me LOL at work.

I made some good progress over the weekend. I have all the fuel lines made but not everything is installed on the car. I forgot I needed to resprary a large portion of the underbody with that rubber stuff because I melted a good amount of it away when I was welding the new seat mount. That stuff takes forever to dry but fortunately I've got some time. I decided to buy a -6 AN pressure test kit (1 solid -6 An plug, and another with a Schrader valve) so I can test my fuel lines. Fragola's website makes assembling hoses look so easy but I can't seem to keep the !$#@ hose from moving. If these were turbo oil return lines I wouldn't care but they need to be able to support up to 60 psi of fuel pressure! Hopefully I'm just being paranoid and everything is fine, but I won't know for sure until tomorrow night. If they do fail there is a guy local to me who builds/sells SS lines and fittings for a living and I'm sure he could make some for me ($$$). Working on a couple other odds-n-ends in the meantime. I'll try to take some pictures tonight.

Yay pictures!

I am so glad to follow this build. Seems like u are a few steps ahead of me, so it helps me if i get in a bind!

Ask and you shall receive...

Okay it's only two pictures but that's because I'm doing a lot of stuff off the car.

I got a bunch of stuff yesterday. Here it is sprawled across the dining room table:

Silicone vacuum hose in 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm, McMaster vacuum block with 5/32", 1/4", and 3/8" fittings, two of those little HKS vacuum hose filters, and two other 1/4" fittings for the intake manifold. The vacuum hose is for the ECU and FPR, intake manifold, PCV, and brake booster lines respectively. The McMaster vacuum block is actually quite nice for <$20; I'm already working on a bracket to mount it to the firewall. The HKS filters are what come with their SSQV BOV's. I normally don't think you need filters for vacuum, but since all my vacuum lines are downstream of the fuel injectors I want to make sure no fuel makes it to the ECU or FPR.

Here's a shot of the engine bay in its current state.

I have the FPR off because I'm painting it's bracket; black, of course. You can see the finished passenger's side engine harness. It runs to the center of the firewall then directly over the engine to intake manifold. I also removed most of the hardlines from the firewall. These were for the vacuum lines and I'm replacing them with the silicone hose. The vacuum block is going to be mounted on the firewall just to the left of the two bolts in the upper right. In the bottom right you can see the CAS wiring and how close it is to the alternator.

Tonight I'll hopefully be pressure testing the fuel lines, finishing the bracket for the vacuum block and working on some vacuum lines.

I was able to put a little work into the RX-7 Tuesday night. Last night was spent shopping for baby stuff.

I got the AN pressure testing kit and immediately went about testing my new hoses. One thing that concerned me was the plug supplied with the kit. It has a pretty big defect that's mostly in the threads but does extend onto the sealing surface; more on that later. The short story is all the lines passed; they held 120 psi for ~5 minutes, but I had to torque down the plugs a lot more than I thought I would. A short conversation with my local braided steel line guys leads me to believe this is likely a result of the defect in the plug and my lines are probably okay. I'm still not 100% confident, but without getting lines mades this is probably as good as it gets.

In the meantime I've been working on a bracket for the vacuum block. This is what I've come up with:

I would have preferred it be more toward the passenger's side but the FPR has already taken the one obvious spot. If I don't like this setup in the end I'll just change it up in the future, but this will have to work for now. The bracket is currently being painted. Since this picture was taken I did reinstall the two shorter fuel lines. Some of the rubber undercoating is still not dry so I'll wait a little longer before hooking up the rest of the lines. Is that stuff supposed to take this long to dry?!

While working on this my mind has wandered to radiator ducting. I already plan on fully sealing everything from the bumper inlet to the radiator but now I'm think of ducting after the radiator as well. My previous plans consisted of just a radiator shroud and fan, but now I'm thinking about cutting out some of the hood to allow the hot air to escape. Something like this (please try to ignore the semi-peripherally ported, N/A, 20B goodness):

Obviously this isn't required to get the car running (so I should probably ignore it) but this would help with water temperatures on track.

Coming along nicely, Jon. That radiator cooling vanes would be sweet. What would you make it out of?

Fram oil filters are on the Sahlens Grand-Am RX-8's. Though they are freaking huge.

Is that the ****** from The Mitty? God that thing was sexy...

I would have such a hard time cutting my hood. Do you have a spare, or can you find one at a local yard?
