MAF or MAP, which one do I need?

I've been chatting with a few diff people in person as well as online, and the general question in hand is this- My goal with my msp is roughly 400+ whp, some people say that I need a new maf and some say a new map, which one do I need? I know you guys know, cause I've seen very impressive #'s from quite a few members. BUT, once the issue is settled at which I need, I also need to know where to get it. Thanks.

The general consensus seems to be this.

MAP - easier to tune, but older tech - therefore not as accurate potentially

MAF - harder to tune, newer tech - potentially more accurate with proper tuning

Anyone feel free to correct me though.

IIRC Kooldino hit voltage cut with his MAF at about 250 whp so I am guessing - like on many turbo cars that people upgrade - you would need a new MAF sensor with a wider spectrum than what the stock car has.

before you even consider a bigger MAF, if you want to reach 400 whp you'll need better rods, pistons, an engine management, possibly an inline or stronger intank fuel pump and injectors depending on which engine management you go, a better intercooler...etc etc

i expect this thread to explode into a MAF vs MAP war and for someone to come in here any minute to tell me in a rather heated manner what ways the above information is wrong.

You want to know how to get 400+whp. Trade in your msp and buy something with 400+whp, because after you are done building the motor, suspension, tranny, axles, differential and rest of the car to take the abuse of 400whp you would have spent enough to buy any number of other cars that have a lot more potential. I have a msp and an evo and the msp is going back to stock and the evo is getting all the money. I also had the goal of 350-400whp, but after I added it all up and was already $5,000 into it and needed another 7k to finish I decided that it was just not worth it. If you hit 400+whp you will be the first to do it on a msp so be ready to spend a whole lot of money.

blah... You just gotta be smart. Or have alot of friends.

Yeah but I am sure he wants longevity. Not a few 1/4 mile passes and then zoom, zoom, boooooom.

strongbear, yah your right, it's gonna take some money, and a ton of parts. But when I first got my car I looked at the wrx, evo, srt-4, svt focus, but some didn't have enough looks, some had too much. The evo was a tad too far out of my price range, and I also looked at it like this-srt-4 runs 15psi factory, and the evo runs even higher. The protege runs the smallest turbo, and only 7psi, so why not be the underdog and beef the motor and other components, and have evos, and sti's checking to make sure my tail lights are working (crazy) .

blkzoomzoom, pm me and give a price and specs.

Does anyone have a 400hp protege? I'm not sure the block is up for it!
the block and crank are fine, supercharged and turbo probes have with the same block and crank have hit 400hp
