Madeye MSP, glowing grille eyes...

OK, here's a COMPLETELY useless and 100% reversible $20 mod which I share only because it's silly, kinda cool, and doesn't involve vinyl, lubricants, or loose women. It's worth absolutely nothing in the 1/4 mile and doesn't improve performance a whit. As a matter of fact I don't know why I even did it, which is good because when I'm sick of it I can remove all traces of it and go on my merry way.

I purchased, on a whim, a pair of those LED glowing bolts (mine are red) and installed them in the grille inside the Mazda insignia to make the Madeye Mazdaspeed. I haven't hooked up the power yet since it's been bone-numbing co-old out and I've been in Russia for 3 weeks adopting a son... but wanted to share the "kit" and installation with y'all.

Parts:

- 1 pair LED bolts, your choice of color

- some spare wiring, a fuse, a switch, and a soldering gun (check the basement)

- A few zipties to clean up the wiring and keep it outta the wind

- The backing plate to a Stainless Steel U-bolt, found in the same basement coffeecan as the switch (no I don't have another)

- A mil-spec safety toggle switch cover - just so passengers will ask questions about it once it's installed.

The bolts turned out to be JUST the right size to interference-fit into the diamond-holes in the grille in about the right place, so I ran the bolts through the grille and secured them using the backing plate to the SS u-bolt (won't rust). I played around a while and found that tightening the bolts will "recess" the "eyes" more than shown in the pic, making the look a little more sinister/sullen. If you want to really secure it, put a dab o' silicone adhesive on the bolt threads.

Secure the wiring using the spare zipties... and FUSE the power cord, just because it's the right thing to do. Hook up the ground and you're good to go!

I've checked, after a couple hundred highway miles at speed in the rain the bolts have not receded or loosened, so I guess they're OK.

I'll be hooking up the power once the weather warms a bit and may use a resistor or something if the LEDs prove too bright, other than that, that's it! I'l attach a pic or two of the install, but don't yet have one of the "on car" look. Will post once I take one.

It's a very good thread, well written and descriptive. However, I'm sorry to tell you what you already know... I don't think i'm going to do this to my car. I am happy that you like it and thanks for the info.

Brian...

actually you just added weight to you car.. and as any true F&F fan should know, your 1/4 mile time WILL be affected with weight increases.

(rofl)

lol too much time on ur hand man lol..........i like it...but a lil ricey for it to show up on my car....

looks like a owl :)

LOL. I did something similiar in 1995 on my Eclipse GSX. I removed the front DSM logo and put a little red LED light in it's place. It was cool for some, did it nicely, but now it would be ricey. I miss those days...

I like it. I think "ricey" defines something that's been done to death. You know, the bench-seat aluminum wing and carbon fiber hood that makes your car really stand out from the 30 others on your block. This is new and unique. Pimpness:D

MAN what a cheapo ugly a$$ mod, can't believe anyone would do that to their car, it adds weight, blocks cooling air from the radiator, and looks... oh, wait... that was me...

Thanks for the kind words - it's strange, but I had this idea, you see, and I had to see it through. I'll take pics with it on as soon as the temp gets high enough to wire it up, predicting record lows here and, well, to a Minnesotan or Michigander it may seem "normal, but 1 degree F is too daggone cold to be doing car electrical work unless it's absolutely necessary!

(... and perhaps it does look something like an owl... a rice owl, I guess... )

Makes me want to make a model out of my Evil MSP dude using LEDs... and then mount it to my trunk... hah

Yo, that's actually pretty cool. Maybe a little ricey, but off the beaten path of ricey. PLus, who care if it's ricey, so long as you are happy with it, it's cool. Just I think I'm popular, therefore I am. It's all in the mindset. woaa, I gotta stop talking to my Karate master: Daniel son, come now, quick you must, grasshopper need you:, woa, I hear voices.

HAHAHAHAHA, it's funny, cause my name is actually Daniel(dan). Sorry for the retarded s***, I'm just bored, and need some cheap thrills. Nice mod with the eyes man.
