Lovin my new MS3

In college I had always thought my next car would be a Mazda 6, while I was driving my Galant. Of course, that changed quickly when my chance to buy a Z06 came along. I always thought my dream car was a corvette, and it was fun, but after a couple of near death experiences (vettes are horrible rain cars if you wanted to know), and a desire for something slightly more practical, the MS3 article in C&D caught my eye. One test drive and I was ready to part ways with the vette.

Believe it or not, as a 22 year old who loves to race and drive fast cars, the MS3 brings more smiles than the vette ever did. Maybe it was just because the force of being pushed into the seat of the vette flattened them out, but either way, the MS3 is not the compromise I thought it would be.

Sure, it has straps for baby seats and 6 air bags for safety, and fold down back seats for that SUV-esque cargo space, but these are just extra benefits. This car is fast, not scary fast, but fast nonetheless. I have a little stretch of road that my roomates and I call the quarter mile, although it is not quite so, and while the vette hits 102, the MS3 still reaches a respectable 93. It probably should be a bigger difference, but there is a slight bump that puts the Z06 out of sorts, while the MS3 was solid throughout. As for torque steer, I have encountered minimal amounts a couple times, but after knowing what happens when you floor it in the vette with the wheels turned, I would consider any negative effects non-existent.

But the real difference between this car and the vette is the smoothness. You don't feel the speed in the MS3, which is why I am investing in a radar detector soon. 80 feels the same as 50, and even 120 is a breeze. And it is true not just for straightline speed. Slinging the car into corners is the most fun I have ever had. Nov. 19th is the next autocross, and you better believe I won't be holding back. I will give you all updates of how that goes. There is WRX running DS, and while he is more experienced than me, I hope to give him a run for his money. Now, all this talk has made me itch for a drive, so gotta go.

SWEEEEEET!!!!!!!
I love my speed3. It's punchy when i need it, has the space when i have friends or cargo, and super sexy to boot

nice review, gotta love props from a former corvette driver! welcome to the forums man, and good luck with the autox

I'm in the Savannah area too & I'm looking to pick one up in the next few weeks. I was wondering how much you paid over sticker (if any) & what dealer you purchased from. Thanks!

I purchased from Fairway Mazda on Abercorn, and I paid MSRP... I do know Hilton Head had one as well, although it looked to me they were marking theirs up 3k. You may want to check tho, as the mazda.com site and their personal site didn't agree on which model they had. As far as Fairway, I know the next one they are getting in is a Black Mica GT, but not for a couple more months is what they were telling me. My salesman was Osha Berry, real cool guy, let me take it out for a 30 mile test drive the day they got it in. I would ask for him if you check out the dealership.

I test drove 1 at Key Mazda but they want $2K over sticker. I was supposed to be on the list to be called when 1 came in at Fairway, but obviously they forgot to call. I may check with them on the black one. Thanks for the info!

I just got my MS3 this past Monday....and I LOVE this car!!! I let my MIL take it for a quick test spin, and even got a giggle out of her!! I noticed from another thread, that I should check out my tire pressure ASAP. I also think that my steering wheel is just a bit off center.
The closest dealership where I could find ANY MSs was about 50 miles away. Made the drive, and boy am I glad I did!! I had only looked at the MS3's online, and when I got up there and saw it in person, and test drove it...I was SOLD! The dealership even took off $300 off the MSRP for the miles that were already on the car. (it was delivered to me w/179 miles).
My only worry now is when my 15 yr old son tries to ask me for the keys in a little over a year....LoL

Oh god keep your kid away from it until he is out of high school.

Kids that age are dangerous in slow vehicles. I should know, I was one just a few years ago. Now I'm older and slightly less dangerous.

PS, 'grats on the car. I'd totally drive 500 miles for one.

haha, bad is an understatement... take your mustang, remove 500 pounds, and add 100 hp. it wouldn't be so bad if it was just under power that it got scary, but when at 60 mph with your foot off the gas, and you are still sliding sideways down the highway...

It's even scarier when you loose traction hammering into 4th gear on dry pavement. Overpowered RWD cars are a blast, lol. Drag radials don't make it any better when it's cold out either.

Z06 to MS3...now that's one for the books. I've got to ask, what did the dealer say to you?

Yeah thats crazy. Can't say I've ever had it that bad. I'm more talking about 3rd gear at about 80 km/h and hitting the throttle. Of course I live in the great white north and my baby is currently sleeping for the winter. I keep forgetting this is a Mazda Forum. Sorry folks..........

Loving the MS3

I got my True Red MS 3 two weekends ago to replace my retired CRX-SI! LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I did ton's of research and after the test drive was ready to deal. The dealer cut me a great deal I only paid 22985! I got the windows tinted last weekend and doing the CAI this weekend.

It's been a blast to drive so far and can't wait to keep adding to it.

Z06's are badass cars but like anything else with that much power, light and rear wheel drive, driving in the rain is dangerous. I keep my truck in the garage during the rain since it has a modified valve body. When it shifts, it shifts hard and if its slippery outside, the rear end surprises you.

Congrats on the MS3.

Interesting observations; right now I'm cross-shopping like crazy. I don't want to support the domestics so I'm only looking at Japanese and German cars. The MS3 is the wild card, other candidates include an E39 M5, an E46 M3, and a Porsche 993. I've never been a fan of FWD, and never owned one either, so the MS3 would require a bit of a learning curve. That said, some of my fellow track instructors have offered to help ease the transition- probably in exchange for some hot laps in the MS3...(hah)

EDIT: With the local Mazda dealer slapping a $3000 ADM on the MS3(not to mention asking $27K for a used MS3 with 6K on the clock), it looks like
I will simply wait a few more months and order one of these puppies.(burnout)

If you ever owned either M or the 993 you wouldnt have made the "dont want to support the domestics"... BMW may make sweet driving machines but they cant design window regulators worth a damn and their rubber wasnt tested in dry hot climates...and have fun on the maintenance...

(9 window regulators, 2 broken sunroofs, leaky oil pump gasket, leaky valve cover all before 80K miles and all with the recommended maintenance service by the dealers....for a $40K+ machine you would think they could afford to make the windor regulators from something other than plastic and if every damn person I know has the problem and at 400 bucks a pop you would think they would fix it - I feel for those who buy the lease returns.... )
