Good to hear! That was a concern of mine when I bought the CX-7. I've always had small 2-door coupes with manual trannys that were easy to control in the snow. I was skeptical about how a bigger car with an automatic would do. It sounds like the CX-7 handles well though, so I'm looking forward to it.

snow

Got our second round of bad weather going on outside right now, freezing drizzle to rain, snow tomorrow. Drove home in it today and am amazed at how great my FWD CX-7 handles things. I've been driving sports cars most of my life so thats part of it, but even compared to other FWD sedans and coupes I've driven this thing seems smooth as heck on the slippery stuff.

Yes! Snow is NO problem. AWD, 18" wheels and 4,000 lbs makes it go VERY good!

As a previous truck owner of many (and a snow plower) the ground clearance is not what I am used to, but it is well better than any car! With an upgrade in tires to more all season or snow this thing would be OUTSTANDING in the snow, but not necessary at all.

Have fun with it!

Yeah I had to goto a Mazda meeting in drexelbrook and I grabbed an AWD CX-7 and headed up. We had snow/freezing rain/sleet all day the previous day (actually had to take about 1-2" of ice off of the CX7 all around). It drove very predictably. Not once did I have any sign of uncontrolled manuevering (even while sliding) and throttle control was easily maintained to give me the amount of power I needed. This thing just rumbled through it all, and when I wanted to slide it around a bit, it only took some extra force on the accelerator. Very well balanced I must say.

I am currently a happy CX-7 owner (I've had if for about a month now). I have a gt AWD and I have a question about the AWD. How do you know when the AWD kicks in? Is it full time AWD?

there will be no OUTWARD signs that the AWD is engaged, it was designed to offer seemless engagement. Basically if the system detects any signs that slippages is about to occur (rather than waiting for you to slip) it sends as much as 50% of the power to the rear wheels..

so unless your ears are good enough (mine arent) to hear the slight sound the rear makes when it switches on, chances are youll never hear anything.

however, give it a lil too much throttle in the snow, and the ass end will predictably slide out a lil, so youll know its working :p

Knowing what I knew now about the gas mileage I'm almost sorry I didn't get the AWD (it would only have been like $1200 more).

Though, I have to say, the FWD is performing wonderfully in this snowy/icy weather.

it would have only made about 2mpg diff. with the AWD system... you have to remember that during normal cruising, the AWD actually functions as FWD until wheel slip is expected not detected (such as on the interstate at cruising speed), then the system engages. Electronics FTW (or FTL when they break)

and I havent driven a FWD in the snow, but I would expect it to handle pretty well considering the weight and size of the vehicle... so yeah, I bet youre doing good w/ the FWD :)

through yesterday's snow/ice/freezing rain in philly, our AWD was a tank. the AWD combined w/ the TSC was great; i wonder how much better it would be w/ snows. after driving my protege around in the snow on OE dunlops for 4 years, this was about eleventy billion times better.

great rims!

Hotrod, did you lower down your CX7 or you just placed bigger tires? I've noticed the smaller gap b/n the tires and the fender

My wife got an AWD CX-7 but she doesnt like to drive in the snow so I get to drive it most of the time in nasty weather. The AWD models have a Traction Control System that kicks in when it detects the wheels spinning. Depending weather you got the standard TCS or you sprang for the extra Torque Sensing TCS they either apply brakes to (standard TCS) or shift the amount of torque from the spinning wheel.
We got the standard TCS and you can feel the brakes being applied to the spinning wheel, usually.
I have been able to fool the TCS system into not applying the brakes. Keep in mind this takes some winter driving skill but if you apply just the right amount of throttle while you are sliding to keep the wheels spinning at just the right speed you can keep the TCS from engaging. Wheee...
I don't recommend this for most people but I grew up in Main and learned to drive in snow long before TCS and Anti-lock Systems were developed. So I look forward to sliding around in the snow. Power sliding and four wheel drift are my favorite things to do in slippery conditions. It drives my wife crazy.
I should mention that I got a set of Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow tires which makes a HUGE difference.

Option? What option?

HUH???

How do you tell which one you have? This was never mentioned to us when we purchased our GT AWD. What else was an option, does anyone know?

lowered?
