Lots of white smoke! -updated

My exhaust everytime I'm at a stop light blows out a lot of white smoke. It only started recently. Smoke is getting worse it seems at idle. So bad the lady in the next lane gave me a stare and had to push her windows up.

What could this be?(nervous)



WELL, ITS THE TURBO. Lots of oil where the turbo clamps up to the intake and also leaking out of the intercooler hoses as well. =( Guess the previous owner didn't take care of the car as well as I thought. The love hate relationship continues with the car............


PS: its a T25 turbo stock right?

Maybe oil, check the level... Take a look at your head gasket and the oil lines to your turbo. I don't know much else that'll blow white smoke out of your exhaust. I was getting something similar when I would start up the car before I did the engine rebuild. Turned out to be a cracked piston head and oil was shooting up through the crack. I doubt you have anywhere near this problem. Just get looking at it quick.

Head gasket might be the culprit - check your oil cap for "mayo" and/or coolant cap for the same.

checked the oil levels, its fine. Only odor I have is exhaust or gas like odor. but its been like that for a while. have to check for the other stuff tomorrow

check to see if you have coolant in your oil or vice versa.

yeah it sounds like you blew a head gasket, when this happens to snowmobiles same thing, white smoke, you may not feel it but your motor definately will

Its wierd, theres no lose of power or anything like that, Aftermarket bov won't sound off in the upper gears.

Coolant and gas cap are very clean.

Did find a stud off the exhaust manifold broke off. That could be why when my heater is on i can smell exhaust fumes? Wouldnt explain the white cloud of smoke at the exhaust tip.

I doubt if it would be the same, but I remember seeing the injectors on a diesel Jet-Fuel truck go bad and it blew similar white smoke... actually, it did it pretty badly. Might want to throw a bottle of injector cleaner through your next tank of gas and see if that clears it up at all. No check engine lights or anything? Also, check your sparkplugs to see if there's a lot of carbon buildup on them, indicating a rich mixture or oil burning.

Otherwise, I have no idea, but I hope that helps...

I'll give the injector cleaner a shot. I know the cars running rich, even with the unichip. I have to get it tuned someday.

I say head gasket as well, keep your eye on the coolant level. Might even help if you mark it with a dry erase marker, check it when it's cold (before you start the car in the morning) it can vary a lot when it's hot or warm.

sorry to tell you ....if no oil in coolant or vice versa your torbo might be BLOWN!!!! leaking coolant internally. coolant into exhaust inside turbo (center section is water cooled READ:cooant is leaking into the exhaust housing and burning white due to exhaust temps) worse at low rpm because there is more pressure in your cooling system then exhaust soo it leaks into exhaust. higher rpms creates ALOT more pressure in the exhaust turbine housing thus limiting how much coolant can leak and burn...before flaming it happened to me in a volvo we nicknamed crop dusting

if so pm me i've worked with a company who rebuilds turbos to new specs (you might even be able to spec different AR ratios, or some minor perf improvement such as faster spool, w/o or very little extra cost and 1 yr UNlimited milage warranty) They are EXCELLENT, GREAT customer service and they VSR balance the rotating assembly so no grenading

I never thought of the turbo as a possible cause but you guys maybe right. I had never seen one go bad and the turbo shop I go to said they are pretty relible/strong but I can see any mechanical piece going bad without any oil.
