Lots of blow-by.... :(

:
2001 Mazda Protege MP3
So I was gonna take the msp to my mechanic and have him change the main crank seal (front) cause its leaking pretty bad. After looking at the car a little he told me he wasnt gonna fix it because it would just go out again. He pulled out the pcv valve and the dipstick and it was blowing out a lot of oily air. He said its most likely my piston rings that are fried. The car only has 78k on it but i guess if it was beat to s*** for that amount of time it is very possible. The car does smoke (white) when i sit there and let it idle for awhile and it will randomly do it when i am driving down the road, not necessarily just when i'm getting on it. I heard if my rings were bad it should be blue smoke right? Isnt white smoke headgasket? I'll drain the oil when i get around to it and see if the antifreeze is mixed in with it. Also makes a non stop squealing noise but i think it might just be one of my pulleys. Car still boosts up to 6lbs perfectly, does smell like it is burning oil when i do push it hard. I found a used motor off a p5 for 400 locally. Just a few things i would need to swap over right?

You could have a few problems here. One of the most common would be the blow-by from excessive crank pressures is getting into your intake manifold thru the PCV system. The side vent is also introducing the crud while the car is seeing boost pressures. The lower cran case cannot evacuate fast enough and carries the oil with the vortexed air. This is being dumped into your intake pipes and making its way to the combustion. The reason why you would see white is because its a mixture of gas, oil and condensation. Not necessarily coolant though. But this is only my evaluation from experience. A few other possible causes are the valve guides are worn and allowing oil into the combustion. The rings being bad at that low of a mileage is not likely, but could easily be determined with a compression test. They can be rented free from places like Autozone. Its as easy as changing a spark plug to do that.

My suggestion would be to first do a compression test since its free. If all cylinders check out, my next suggestion would be to get a Signature Products PCV Eliminator Kit. Its a dual tank set-up designed specifically for your car. It will filter and isolate combustion impurities commonly associated with the Protege's wonderful PCV system (sarcasm). If you would like to get on the list, please go to this thread:Signature Products Catch Cans

You will have some info there, but please do not hesistate to ask any questions.

Ok coil. Thank you so much for your input. I was talking to some people on a local forum and they said if its the same msp they are thinking of, it has forged internals. I'm trying to get in touch with the owner that did the mods to hopefully find out more about it but we'll see. I will try doing a compression test sometime this week.

Sounds good. Keep us updated please!

i to have this same problem. i was pulling out of the drive way today and as soon boost started to kick in a bit i seen a big buff of blue come out the ass end. got home and took off the line going from the side of my motor into my intake, and the intake pipe itself and seen ALOT of oil in the pipe. would this be the same thing your describing? and would that catch can fully fix that problem?

or does it mean we will need to replace something inside?

This is EXACTLY what the breather tanks are for! To say it will fully fix the problem is too hard to determine without knowing what else is going on with the car. But its DEFINITELY a step in the right direction.

do these breather tanks come from canada? where abouts are you from? anyone know what would cause blow by like this?

If there is a lot of oil in your intake tube, it sounds like your turbo seals are bad, especially if it's smoking blue when you're boosting. Check the downpipe for wet/oil as well.

im 100 % sure its from the side vent off the vc just put a catch can on today so we will see what happens. hasnt puffed blue since that one time

when i take the intake pipe off its right on the other side of the pipe where that hose goes into. anyone know what would make a car randomly start passing that much oil? pcv seems fine, and its bran new

the way the system works is like this: while cruising, the pcv is pulled open by vacuum from the intake manifold. This allows UPPER crankcase pressures to be recirculated into the combustion chamber. During boost, the intake manifold is pressurized and the pcv valve is forced closed causing the crank case pressures to vent thru the breather barb. This is referred to as LOWER case pressure (or vacuum). The reason for seeing it all of a sudden could be from a few factors combining. Thinner used oil, broken down from blow-by gasses made its way into the combustion. Enough finally collected to burn in abundance to make the smoke. But you should know everyone is having this problem. Thats why Signature developed the PCV Eliminator kit and breather tank for boosted applications. Its a balanced system that maintains the equal air flow from the upper and lower crankcase vents, but with a ton more flow (and a lot less velocity).

CR3 Motorsports is home based in Hawaii. Signature's Tanks are made in Indiana. We have shipments going to Canada all the time if interested in a true combustion purification system.

well i would have said es but i felt i needed to fix the problem sooner so i ended up buying a catch can. sorry as much as i want to support the forum members i couldnt wait for the shipping at the time.. what else does cr3 have to offer??

TONS OF STUFF!!!! ADP's, PCV Eliminator Kits, Coilovers, Turbo's, Custom made Coolant Tanks, Valve Cover Powder Coating (best deal anywhere), Stainless Steel Power Steering tanks (custom one-offs. 4 pcs will be made for the initial offering. first come first served). We are working on a turbo manifold and down pipe combo (pics to come soon), we even do firearm ceramic coating! Theres lots more and we are just getting started. Shoot a PM over and tell me more about your car. We can go from there... I'm sure once you see our prices, and what you get for the money... you will be like all the others and become a loyal customer for life.
