Loss of nav with aftermarket stereo?

Does anybody have any confirmation of this? According to the Crutchfield site, Nav is lost when replacing the stock stereo. I would think that the only thing lost would be the voice directions. And that could probably be resolved with some creativity.

In my 2000 Sunfire, I lost my door chimes when I replaced the stereo. Rumors also said you'd lose airbag functionality, although those later turned out to be bunk, I think... never had the pleasure of finding out myself ;)

Bottom line, Crutchfield sometimes has no clue what they're talking about, but it's worth heeding their warning... it might be legit as for some reason manufactures are putting more responsibilities than necessary on the stock radio.

Well, I don't own a 2000 Sunfire, don't care about door chimes, and didn't ask about airbags. And I've found that the people at Crutchfield usually do pretty good research. But I understand there's something deep inside you that says you MUST reply to each and every thread in here, regardless of your knowledge on the subject, so I'll forgive you.

Anyone with any first hand experience?

I was just trying to be helpful, but I understand there's something deep inside YOU that says you MUST be rude when you reply to my posts. Just add me to your ignore list and move on, I'm sick of getting shot down by you for doing nothing other than trying to help.

As far as first hand experience with someone on this board, with nav, that's replaced their head unit, that see's this thread and replies... well, good luck with that. (notcool)

dommo_g, jandree22 did give some decent advice concerning your situation in the second part of his post. He included the story about the 2000 Sunfire to inject some humor. No need to get your panties in a bunch.

The 5 is a new vehicle, you're honestly going to be lucky if somebody has the first-hand experience you desire. Crutchfield has a fairly liberal return policy, why don't you try and find for yourself, and post about the results?

it is know that this s*** happens on the 3, so I'm sure it's the same on the 5... for the 3, the only way you can keep everything working but using an aftermarket radio is to get this expensive ass dash kit in japan that includes control modules and wiring to keep everything working

^^ ouuuuch. The Consumer Electronics Association does not approve. As nice as a beautifully-integrated OEM system is, high costs to repair/replace are NOT cool.
