my 02 protege 5 just started to make this annoying rattle, i have gotten this checked out and i was told it was a loose valve, but after looking at some videos and not finding a similar sound well im not sure. the sound is similar to a loose manifold,( not the problem ) the rattling only happends on startup but it immediately stops, the sound occurs at about 2200 rpm, it increases in speed and loudness as the revs go higher. i would like to know if this can simply be fixed by adjust the valve or if it is something else... thxs guys

It's not a loose valve it's a lifter ticking if your lucky you would have to measure the lash in them and reshim it to put it in spec
If its getting louder as the rpms get higher it sounds more like a spun rod bearing. Change your oil and make sure there's no metal in it

it was way worse!!! my engine is finished!!! entirely messed up... a piston finally slammed into my valves...if you get a slight knock people go directly to the garage! i had my oil changed the day before, i should of changed it 5000kms ago but i didnt... the knock came inside a span of a couple days and then it was over...
