^ This. An quality balance of all three for Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" and new "SkyActiv" philosophy. You would be surprised at how much total weight can be saved by not adding an extra layer of (rather unnecessary) adhesive for the carpets. Though I must admit the quality of the carpet surface is rather sub-par as it is almost like velcro.
Take a notice at the weight of the four mats. I can guarantee all four total weight is equal to if not less than the weight of ONE mat of another brand's. Yet they serve they're purpose of being mats.
Mazda has gone a significant distance in engineering light weight platforms. It is their "Gram Strategy". Another example are the bolts. Look at the exposed bolts/nuts on the car. The seat rails have a few. Notice how it is a star pattern and hollow in the head? This alone saves a few grams per bolt (I have the comparison some where). When tens of thousands of small miscellaneous items add up, it makes quite a difference in total weight. Some times cutting material in one area may lead to increase in NVH where they have to make up by reengineering another area. E.G., the dash is made of the soft rubbersized material that it is not only for quality touch point and look, but it plays a large role in decreasing cabin noise.
Why do you think Mazda's cars are usually one of the lightest if not the lightest in their classes? Obviously a lower weight directly translate to better handling, straight line performance, and fuel economy.
