Loose Bumper Step Plate?

I've had my Mazda5 for about 6 weeks. Strange thing is the bumper step plate is coming off on the right side of the bumper. The adhesive is not sticking. I'm reluctant to take it to the dealer I bought it at for this, since the dealer is about 2 hours away. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good safe adhesive to keep it in place? Has anyone else had this problem as well? I'm guessing it was applied by the dealer when the bumper was dirty or not prepared for it to stick.

3M makes double sided tape for automotive trim. Get some at a body shop or local parts store. Pull off the step plate and start over I guess.

I find it hard to believe a Trim plat, or step plate, is only on with adhesive.

DO you have a Mazda dealer closer...that should be a warranty issue that any dealer should e able to resolve.

If you try to fix it yourself and mess something up....you are then liable for the damage vs. having the dealer do it and being liable.

Just a word of advice.

(uhm)unless i'm not reading this correctly this is a plastic piece on the rear bumper to protect the bumper for getting scratched up?? if so, heat it up with a heat gun, pull it and all the adhesive tape off, retape with the 3m stuff metioned above and clean the bumper real good with a cleaner...not windex, then reapply...you really can't mess this up (move the heat around, don't keep it in one place to long and it won't take much to pull the piece off once the heats hit it) good luck!

See..here in lies the problem..you say "you can't mess this up"..However....Your asking a guy to add heat to a Meltable Bumper....
We do no know his mechanica Skill or know how....

And its just like this that things happen..and if it does..it wont be covered..but if he lets the dealer do it..all is covered if they screw it up.

I personally would ax the thing..unless you have a Habit of being Careless and like todrag things across the top of your bumper?

i guess he'll have to decide that...he was asking for some help because he really didn't want to go back to the dealer...this is my suggestion...he may decide this isn't for him and take it back two hrs to get it fixed...i hope it's under warrenty!

Have had the same problem here.

If the Bumper step plate was installed by the Mazda dealer, you may rejoice, as it is covered by the warranty, and I would take it back to them.

If you installed it like I did mine, you are in for a fun time.(argh)

You have to remove the step plate from the bumper, it should lift off pretty easy if you do it on a warm day.

The step plate is installed with about 14 pieces of double sided foam trim tape, and it is a bear to remove all of the tape from the bumper, as well as the tape that is on the step plate. You have to use some sort of adhesive remover to get all of the goo off of the step plate and the bumper. The trim tape is pretty easy to find, I got mine at the local Kragen's.

Its on with double sided tape. I purchased mine from a mazda dealership. It came in a mazda box, and the double sided tape was already applied and ready to go. I just had to peel and stick it on their.

Believe it or not....oh and its been in place for nearly two years now.

So i say go buy some 3M double sided tape (maybe from your local auto store) clean the surface really well and stick the damn thing in place. :p

I would also rather not have the step plate, but I have 4 kids under 8 years old and my black bumper didn't have a scratch on it when I put the plate on. Perhaps in 10 years I can pull the plate back off, but by then I assume it will be a moot point.

What I don't like is I live in the country where there is lots of dust. The plate harbors dust underneath it and is impossible to get it all out. When washing the car the dirt comes out when you are trying to dry or wax the car, which is a pain.
