Looking to buy a used 2009 CX-9

Hi guys, first post.

I found a 2009 CX-9 GT with 21K miles that is priced pretty good (http://tinyurl.com/6cv8ahb). I have a few questions that hopefully you guys can help me with:

- How is the reliability of the 2009? I'm a little worried that the car is no longer under the initial 3 year warranty period
- What is the difference between 09 and 10 (besides the smiley face)? Worth paying more for a 2010? Looks like most 10 are ex rental cars.
- How can I tell if a car is T or GT? You can see that his one has no Nav and I dont think it has BSM.

If it has fog lights it's a GT. If it has leather and no fog lights, its a touring. If it has cloth seats, its a sport. 21k is a good price. 09 reliability is good. Couple of things were improved over 08. By the way 3yr warrany on a 2009 is to date of initial sale 2012 or 36k miles whichever comes first, and powertrain warranty is 60k miles. You would still be under 36k warranty right now. Make sure you run autocheck not carfax and see if your insurance co. can run an iso search on the vin# for you which is even better than autocheck. DO NOT BUY A FLEET/LEASE vehicle as most of those have had shotty repairs done.

Actually, after looking at your link, that vehicle is a touring, without bose or nav or anything, looks like some moderate creasing in the leather... I wouldn't go any higher than 18 on that one.

This is the cheapest decent example that I could find on autotrader. Used car prices are ridiculous right now given all the incentives on new cars. Yeah, I suspected it its a Touring and not a GT. Could I ask what other things besides the leather made you think 18K is a fairer price? I think the car is basically already out of warranty because the initial sale date is 10/28/2008 according to Carfax.

Yeah, if the initial sale date was 10/28/08 then it is out of warranty for the 3yr. I say that about the price cuz I got mine in spring of 2011 (this year), production date 5/08, with 32k miles, sat at this dealer most of the winter, so it was only driven for 2 winters. Mine (GT) has every option possible from Mazda, and I found a gem, not so much as a scratch on any wheel, leather immaculate, no dents or dings of any kind, interior, exterior and engine all immaculate, and for 23k.

For a touring with not really many options, 2008, out of warranty, if its not in tip top perfect shape, 18 really would be about the right price, but that's just me, again basing it on what I got mine for.

I think the starting price is a bit high. The mileage is decent, but it's relatively stripped down CX9. Ultimately it is what you think is fair and the options you are looking for, but I would venture to guess if you can get it under 20K you are doing much better. Not sure what your tax situation is in CA, but I am in AZ and buying used from a dealer runs about 10% in tax. Buying from a private owner costs nothing in tax so right off the bat for me I was ahead over $2000. Didn't mean to throw that in there and get off topic, but could be worth mentioning. Again depends on availability of used cars, etc.

Went to check out the car today. The interior was actually pretty clean and the leather seats were in good shape. Unfortunately it was pretty obvious that the rear quarter of the car was poorly repainted. Now looking at a brand new one and see if I can get a deal.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but... do all GT have fog lights and power rear gate...is this a standard option?

GT has xenon power adjustable headlamps, has fog lamps standard. Power gate is an option. If it doesn't have fogs, its either a sport or a touring.

BTW... noticed you have a "MZ3" I'm curious as to the terminology. Not trying to be a prick, honestly just wondering, M Roadster or MZ3 or Z3 M all the same thing? I always thought there was the Z3, then there was the M Roadster... but is there a Z3 with an "M" package. I've noticed you can buy an X3 with an "M" package aka X3 M, but you can also buy an X3 with "M" styling appearance package "X3 that looks cool". I can't seem to keep up with all their variations these days.

Haha I didn't really know the correct names either when I was first looking at them. I've seen BMW throw out all those terminologies but I think the correct one is M Roadster and M Coupe. It has the M3 engine, bigger wheels, sport suspension, seats and gauges. Before the M Roadster I had a regular Z3 with the M package which I think just added some different leather stitching and M badges in the interior.
I haven't heard about an X3 M but did see an X5 M the other day. Damn that looks badass and it can def keep up with many sports cars with V8 twin-turbo

Agree, X5 M = badass. Its funny though, Topgear featured I think an X6 or X6 M, whatever. It was completely useless going up a hill. They panned out to show Jeremy Clarkson trying to drive up a grassy hill, and he ended up with the wheels locked, sliding backwards down the hill, and then all the sudden a Range Rover comes blasting up the hill, while the X6 is sliding backwards. Course I'm sure that X6 had z rated summer tires which will make a big differnce, but still puts these massive 4 seater suv's into perspective.

Yeah I remember that episode haha....he totally ripped on that car. (Jeremy Voice) "It's Stttuuupid!" The X5 and X6 are not "real offroad" SUV. I don't beleive they have any low-range gear.
