I have a friend looking to sell his 1989 626 turbo.
it has 60,000 original miles on it and is all stock.
The thing I don't know about is it has All Wheel Steer.
( AWS ) It was a Display car for years at the Mazda
plant it was built at. How rare is it and how could I
find out how many were made?
Thanks for any input you all might have!!

Tim

What does he want for it? I'm not sure how many they made in 4WS. It wasn't the best system from what I understand. The motors on these cars were really good and seem to be pretty reliable even with the turbo.

Being a Michigan car I would check for the normal rust areas, but the low mileage is a plus. If the car is in good shape cosmetically I think that could be a fair price. The only problem is it will probably never be worth that much money to anyone but us Mazda enthusiasts who get excited by clean 20 year old econoboxes with sleeper motors.

Is it a hatch or sedan? They are a little rare, but really the only people who would care are the mx6/probe/626 community. At 60,000 miles, the engine isn't even broken in yet. If you want some more info on it, check the mx6.com boards. All the info you could want is there. If you have any question just ask me. I still own my mx-6 and don't plan to sell it anytime soon.

personally, i'd take it. my knowledge of gd platform cars may be off, but i believe that 626's didnt come turbo which would make this one uber rare. some pix of it would probably help us help u decide :p

No they do, the rare part of the car is the 4WS. Even the gen before this one had a turbo model.

the GD platform, 88-91 626 turbo model was a 5 door and it could have AAS and 4WS. the last year(92) there was no turbo model
MX6 had a turbo model from 88-92
Probe had a turbo model from 88-92, probe didnt get 4WS or 4WD.

4WD models were only in europe, japan and austrailia

k thanx for clarifying, i thought only the probe/mx-6s came in turbo. OMG i saw one of those 5-door 626's the other day, it was HOT !!!

I've seen pics of a factory turbo sedan, with 4WS. It was for sale in Jersey, I really wanted to see it in person.

Edit: 88 was the only year the sedan turbo was available. most where only automatic :(

DUDE, stop asking stupid questions and go buy the ******* car before the guy changes his mind!

GOSH

i'll kill for a turbo 626

I don't have a 626, but I do have a 90 GT Probe which basically shares the same engine and drivetrain. These engines are a blast and with some modifications, you will make a lot of people wonder just what the hell you have under the hood. If it has adjustable suspension, it probably no longer works. ABS motor is another common problem. Most factory parts are no longer available either. Junkyards and recyclers will become your best bet for parts.

WOOOOOOOOT!! Turbo 626!! I wanna throw one in my car, but mine would be after market not stock! I just dropped in a JDM 2.0L into my girl, next up, port & polish, but I'd kill for a turb!
