Wondering if anyone's found a spray paint brand and color that matches the metallic grey on the dash around the stereo for an 09 M5.(I think it's the same on the 08) I want to paint my metra kit to match if possible, otherwise I might have to go black to match the new stereo.
Thanks

Sorry to revive an old question, but I'm in the same boat, and was wondering if anyone has had any luck with painting the silver dash kit to match the new interior a little better ('08-'09). Pics would be awesome to see, too!!
Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I used a Rustoleum textured paint found at Lowe's, looks almost perfect. Thing is I painted my surround black-- the glare of the OEM piece is distracting to me.

I'll be selling my kit soon probably (uninstalled) since I don't think I'll be bothering with an aftermarket stereo in the 5...

I will definitely be painting my dash kit, and in doing a little research about painting plastics, I've come across the Dupli-color vinyl & fabric paint, which apparently soaks right into the plastic. Supposedly one of the best paints to use on cars, since it's not affected by high heat, UV, and won't chip.
The problem is that it only comes in a few colors, so there's a good chance I'll now be painting mine black. Thinking I'll go with a gloss finish to simulate the OEM piano black finish for the factory nav.
I haven't received my dash kit yet, so if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm open to them... otherwise, standby for pictures once it's all done :)

I recommend it not be gloss. I painted my Metra radio trim (Clutchfield) with flat black, Rustoleum Camo Flat Black. Make sure it is very clean. A sanding with 400 grit sand paper will help. Paint using 6-8 thin layers. Don't get in a hurry. Mine turned out great and looks like it came from the factory that way.

I ended up getting mine professionally painted a while back. They started out trying to match with paint from a can (I can't remember the name) that they've always had success with and it wasn't sticking at all. They ended up using an exterior automotive finish which actually turned out pretty nice. Unfortunately it cost more to get a professional to do it but since they messed up with the original paint I wasn't charged extra for the automotive paint. I'll post picks when I get a chance. Only bad thing is, if I go back to factory I'll have to replace some extra pieces so they match. (I think I'm just gonna leave it the way it is now.)

Thanks Scottgib,

I'll start shopping around for paint and see what I can get, but now that I have a closer look at the surrounding dash, I think you're right - I'll probably not go with the gloss now.

Something new

I seem to have found a double DIN dash kit that matches the new silver of the '08-'09 models.

It's made by a company called autoleads and it's model number dfp-26-02.

I've only found it available in the UK, but it's available from online retailers, and ebay. Not cheap, though, as it seems to have a standard price of 50 pounds!
From the pictures, the build quality looks pretty good, and the color seems like the new version of silver.

I haven't bought it (yet) as I just finished installing a metra kit yesterday that I painted black - turned out OK, but there's a noticeable gap below the center climate control which I wasn't expecting. For that reason alone, I wouldn't recommend the Metra kit.

Here's a link to anyone who'd like to see the new color (it's the third one for the mazda5): New Facia Plate

It's not the same color as my 09 ...

Here is an image that show the color:

Best freaking paint on the planet for painting plastic JUST under the pro level IMO, FOLLOW the directions, as stated above, some great advice; 6-8 THIN layers and let each DRY IN THE SUN for 10 MIN before apply the next one. TAKE YOUR TIME, do it right the first time. :)

ROCK HARD TOO, THAT PAINT WON'T SCRATCH AS EASY like other paints and I'd think watches, rings, keys, drink cups etc. will come into contact with that area possibly, so I'd clear coat it too. (glare)

In my 20 years of 'rice'ing up' cars, I've had both good and bad experiances with painting the interrior of a vehicle, i.e. vents, steering wheels, dash, knobs, door trim, etc. etc. and I have to say that paint I liked above is/was the BEST results I've ever had. Now for the sad part...

(bang) can't get that paint over here in Okianwa and the wife and I have looked some, but no luck so far. I know sending paint / chems via postal mail is a pain in the ass to get here, ... *sigh*

Anyhow, good luck, post some pictures please when you get it done. Don't forget to use the 'flower' setting on your camera and get some real close up ones, show the detail of the paint.

Peace!(rei)
