Looking for a higher output alternator

Greetings. I've searched the forum for "alternator" and didn't come accross anything so I've started a new topic. I need to get a high output alternator for my Protege 5. Why? Aside from the dimming of the dash/radio at times I am going to be adding a AMP and a Computer/Touch Screen to the car and I'm sure I'll need more juice. That said, has anyone added an aftermarket alternator to their P5 that has more than 80w of power? Names, part numbers and links are much appretiated.

streetwires make very good alternators check them out. they also make caps that also help the dimming lights and deepcycle batteries. guess you just need to figure out what will better solve your problem.

you can't reliably upgrade the alternator in our cars. BTW the stock alternator is <strike>65amps which is more like 800 watts than 80 :)</strike> Oops sorry I mean 80a

Thanks for the info. I'm having trouble locating somewhere that sells Streetwire Alternators. I've done some searching and found people taking about their custom installs using "Streetwires ###w Alternator" but no where that sells them.

www.streetwires.com seems to only sell audio related equipment.

Are you saying that the increase in power output wont be enough or it wont work? The replacement alternator from Auto Zone and from another local supplier is an 80amp alternator. Odd that they would sell an aftermarket that wouldnt work as a direct replacement.

sorry my bad, our alternators are 80a stock. There is something about how the alternator is controlled by the ECU that makes upgrading the amperage without some nasty workarounds impossible.

could someone post specs of our current alt. my wife sells alt and starters along with rebuild kits etc shes been asking about putting a bigger one in

I had the same problem. On the weekend my car started making some noise in the front( power stearring pump) I finally got it down to the shop on Tuesday and he finally came to the conclusion that my stereo was drawing to much power which started lagging on the other electrical parts in the car. I figure if I put in a Cap on my stereo it will even out the draw aswell as in the near future I will replace my older battery with an Optima red top.

YELLOW TOP!!! nough said
my friends is running a 2250class D at 1ohm for 3 12's no caps or anything, just the yellow top and he's also running about at 750 watt amp for his highs.
all planet audio... if you need a stock alternator i can sale you one with only 38Kmiles

i have the problem with the dimming lights...but i solve that by never running the air compresser and keeping the zone selector knob in the first 2 zones so that the auto defrost doesnt turn on
but ill be throwin in a set of dual 8" subs with a LT430 amp sometime soon...so we'll see how that works out

If you search around you'll find a lot of people talking about this...As far as I know, there is no way to "upgrade" the alternator....or increase the amps...The best solutions I've read are to get an optima yellow, re-wire with some heavier gauge wires from the battery to decrease resistance in the system, add a grounding kit, or just deal with the dim lights....It may also be the battery dying...if the lights are getting really dim, I would say buy a new battery and check the alternator is working properly.....

This is the best I could do for ya...No experience with it just some techincal data.....From the repair manual..

No mater what car you have you can upgrade the altnator, it just takes some creativity.

For example we put a 105amp alt in a 91 talon by building a bracket out of steel and mounting the alt to that. Then used an external regulator from a ford ranger. 14.7v no matter what rpm the car was at.

yea my lights are dimmin like a b****. 2 12s with a 980watt amp. 700rms constant. even with a 1.5farad cap and my electrical system grounded out they still dim. im gonna get a bigger cap and eventually an optima battery

Your capacitor is big enough (A half farad per 500 watts is the scale), get the Optima first, then maybe a second battery or Batcap in the back.
