Hey all,

Currently I'm rocking the Protege5, but I'm looking for something with a bit more pep for the summer months, and have always been a fan of the RX-8. I found one for a decent price and i just wanted to ask, is there any big issues with that specific year model?

It's a 2004 GT Coupe, 95,000Kms.

Anything I should really be worried about? any recalls or anything?

Thanks

get the VIN for that RX-8, and contact a Mazda dealership to see if there are any outstanding recalls on that particular car.

good luck.

From what I've been able to gather on various forums, RX-8s were hit and miss as far as engine problems go. I know Mazda has replaced quite a few engines in them. Apex seals seem to be the achilles heel, some having problems early and some seemingly last forever. Use of synthetic oil was named as the cause of some failures, and synthetic is recognized as a no-no for the rotary now.

Oil consumption seems to have been an issue with some owners who were unaware that the engine is designed to consume oil. There's actually a dedicated system to divert oil for this purpose, so some unknowing owners ran their cars dry. Oil level must be checked and often topped up periodically.

The most frequent gripe I've heard is the lack of torque. The engine is small and while it produces upward of 200hp, torque is down around the 130s so straight-line acceleration is less than stellar. Where the car makes up for the lack of muscle is when the road turns twisty. Track times remain good for the car due more to agility than raw power.

I read something a while back that I remain skeptical on....the statement that the car should be warmed up extensively before driven. I haven't seen anything conclusive on this. It's also been said that it's actually better for this engine to rev the crap out of it rather than putter around. I just didn't get a clear picture about why this is...I suspect carbon buildup in relation to optimum operating temperatures. For these reasons, some people on various Mazda forums have found it to be a less-than-ideal daily driver or commuter car.

Considering the potential for problems, speaking for myself I'd pass on an RX-8 with that many miles on it. But I'd pass on almost any car with that many miles on it, so that doesn't speak for an RX-8 specifically. The older I get, the more I despise car headaches.

Happy hunting!

for the record, it's 95,000 KMs, so like 60,000miles-ish.

Also thanks for the heads up, I'll go to RX-8 club and check it out!

I don't feel like answering anything you wrote because ALL OF THEM have been discussed and beaten to death on the RX-8 forum, and frankly I don't feel like answering them anymore, so READ!

"so READ!"

You're not the only member of the RX8 forum, and since I do not, and have never owned an RX-8, I guess READING would be where I got the information I posted.

So YOU read.

As far as you not 'feeling like answering', nice cop out. You have no constructive comments to make, so if you don't like the contents of this thread, you're completely welcome to find the nearest pier and jump.

So why are you even in this thread? guy is asking for info on RX-8, and as an actual OWNER of a RX-8, I gave him the first thing he should DO before even considering picking up the car. I think my advice is more relevant than all that stuff you 'gathered' from teh intertron.

the pier is waiting for you.

As an actual owner, you're more likely to offer a wagon load of subjective information like most owners do. But your 'relavent' post offered exactly ZERO from your ownership experiences, so if anyone has been less than helpful here, it's you. "Look for outstanding recalls" Pure genius.

oh, and kthxbye.

what can I say, my car's been pretty much flawless in the 3 years and 68k miles I've had it, really can't say much when there's nothing bad to say you know ;)

Yup, traded my P5 for the 8 back in March. Best trade I ever made. Bought it used and made sure all recalls were done. Not a single issue and I've driven her hard through very warm and cold temps.

STAY AWAY FROM AN 04 RX8!!!!!

If you must buy a used one, go 06 and higher.

Why? We have an 04 GT and it's been great, no problems at all. Proper maintenance and having any recall work done, and it's flawless (all the recall stuff was really small, no engine issues, just stupid stuff like better spark plugs and a more powerful starter/battery, etc).

Rotary advice for ANY rotary: Check the oil and warm it up before you shut it off.

There are many people having problems with the 04's...not just the engine either.

Yes...I have all the TSB and recalls done
Yes....The car is well taken care of

No...they didn't have the bugs worked out of the car for that year.

Thats a myth. Unless you were being sarcastic :D

All the rotaries in any professional racing team where its track or strip, use synthetic in their engines.

Look up idemitsu.

And yes stay away from 04's. Get an 05+ if you can.

We use synthetic in our Race RX7 because we have no oil metering pump, and run proper premix. I know reviews were mixed about using synthetic in a car with an OMP because it may not burn as easily/may leave deposits. Not sure if that is rectified.
