Looking at a p5 tomorrow, need some help/pointers!

Here's a pic of the engine bay of my 14 year old Toyota Rav4 before I traded it in. I bought it new and it had no special treatment other than a once or year or so car wash treatment of the engine bay. Negligible corrosion here in the south.

Damn...that thing was a mess. Good choice on passing it up, especially at that price! I agree with the others on trying to find a car from the South. Yeah, you will have to do some travelling and it might be a PITA to convince your dad that it's a good idea but in the long term it will be worth it.

Oh and Bazooka Joe knows about the rust very well....he lives in MA with plans to move to NC and I know he's had rust areas fixed on his P5 over the years. ;)

Yeah if I had more money and knowledge at my disposal and could get the car at the right price, I'd think about getting it as a parts car and doing a swap into an auto cause there are a of autos with high milage that might be in better condition. We'll see about the one I'm gonna check out today, hopefully it's in better condition, more milage (89k) but listed at 6k so fingers crossed! This one has a carfax and is verified 1 owner, no accident car so that's always a plus.

I think the problem is people in New England are generally lazy and don't wash out the engine bay or the underside of their car in the spring which would drastically cut down on the amount of rust.

Hope you have better luck with this one!

Oh, sorry. I thought you had the doors professionally fixed. I've heard good things about the POR-15 but not so sure it works well on holes. (freak)

Well the one I looked at yesterday hadn't been serviced in 30k miles (3 years) and I was pulling out chunks of rusted out rear wheel fender so we decided against it. Plus my dad thought the lot was run by the Russian mafia so we bailed.

Got a couple more leads but they're a bit of a haul so I'm calling in and getting the down and dirty details about rust and service history and hopefully something good comes out! I also posted a WTB thread so if anybody knows anyone in the New England area send them my way!

Hopefully an hour drive will pay off for me. Going down tomorrow to check out this one. I talked to the owner of the place and he says it's one of the cleanest p5's he's seen (he's got at least 1 other to base it off) and he's done a full service on it so that's good. Got 84k on it, $7.2k listed but that seems high, so we'll see.

I'll say though, as much as finding these cars and having them be in bad condition and not worth a second thought, I didn't get to do this with my first car, my parents were like HEY YOU GET THIS! So it's fun going around and looking for them and finding out about them!

So my dad and I have talked it over and we're not opposed to the idea of going on a road trip to find a car that's rust free with impecable service history, so that opens up some more options. But that's less money I get to spend on some mods once I do get a car.

As far as the cars go, in 2 that I've seen (didn't bother looking under the hood of 1) and there's 1 spot of rust that kinda bothers me. It's on the passengers side wheel well where the 2 panels meet, that seam has some pretty heinous rust, the car I looked at yesterday I felt like if I pushed hard enough on the rust spot I'd poke right through. Obviously it's something that I would worry about a little cause it exposes the engine and water and gross bits will get up in there, so 2 questions surrounding it. First off is it something to really worry about, it seems pretty normal so that kinda leads me to my second question of, is it (relatively) easily fixable? It seems like if I end up getting a new england car that I'll be running into the problem regardless and wouldn't mind spending some money to get it fixed up.

Awesome that your dad is willing to go on a road trip to help you find one!!!

So the rust is on the front fender???? Hmmmm, I have to be honest and say that's the first I've heard of that and makes me believe that there may have been some repair work done there? I could be wrong and only reason I say that is the problem areas for rust on this car are the strut towers in the engine bay, rears of the rocker panels, inner doors at the bottom, quarter panels where they meet the rear bumper and the badges on the hatch.

There's also a section on the front where 3 panels go together that are really bad about rusting I believe that's what you are talking about. I live in va and I have a little bit of rust there as well

Yeah that's the spot tweety. It's been pretty gnarly on 2 of the cars i've looked at so far. Also both sides where the quarter panel / bumpers meet have had bubbly rust. so the search continues!!!

the only problem with going on a road trip to find a car is that I have to spend money to try and find a car and hope there's one out there that's good and all that.

Sedans just don't do it for me anymore. I love the utility and look of wagons. If I wanted a sedan I'd definitely hop on an MP3, but I'm bound to own a wagon by the end of the year haha.

Just might have found the car for me. http://www.smithusedcars.com/detail-2002-mazda-protege5-5dr_wgn_2_0l_manual-used-7466421.html
only 80k miles, sexy white, comes with a warranty and optional extended warranty. Everything is up to date, not sure about tires but I'll need new ones anyway after the winter. Talking it over with the parents this week and might go get it this weekend and have a build thread started by Sunday!!!

Looks pretty nice. The dealer must know about the rear fender rust issue since there are pictures of both sides. The interior, IMO, looks like it's in the best condition. I know it's probably not a big deal but there seems to be some rust stains behind the driver's side headlight? And the driver's side front bumper has the infamous sag. And also some light damage down by the fogs. You may want to invest in some of the AAC Bumper Brackets. Price seems to be on the high side so hopefully you can talk the dealer down some.

Hope things go well for ya :)

I asked him to post some pics of the engine bay and the fenders, not driving 6 hours to pick up a bubbly rust-mobile. Yeah it looks really good overall, I picked up the carfax on it and it looks pretty clean, big maintenance done about 4k ago when it was traded in. I actually didn't notice the rust behind the drivers side headlight, but I'm not too worried about it, considering the car otherwise is in good condition, especially that passenger front wheel well issue being non-existant.

As for the price, the KBB for the car in excellent condition is 7.5k, and all I really have to go on is the pics cause I'll have to do a bank check so everything's gotta be worked out over the phone, but I'm gonna shoot for around 7k, I'd be happy spending that amount for a car that I'm pretty psyched about. In looking around there really aren't other cars that I like with the exception of an impreza wrx and a3 both of which are 3-5k more than the p5.

Also the radio looks like it was installed pretty shittily. Looks all crooked and s*** lol.

If you do get the car, I'd recommend getting the Mazda OEM radio pocket and support beam. The one used in your potential P5 is a Scosche kit which not too many P5 owners are fond of. It rattles badly and as you can see, does not fit all too well.

Here's my setup w/Mazda open pocket (the one from the Mazdapeed Protege has a door which is REALLY expensive):

yeah i'm definitely gonna replace that deck. Looks like sheeet. I'm thinking about getting a double din deck though maybe some in dash GPS action...?

sometimes i hate the door it can get annoying but thats me. double dins are nice but expensive if you spend less than 800 on one its junk just a heads up if you do get one make sure you get it from a real manufacturer like kenwood. or better yet go through crutch field so that if you dont like it you can return it
